Strange Equalizer Hitch Ratings

Upgrading my Equalizer hitch from the 10k to the 14k. The 10k has actually worked well for us but we exceed the 1000lb tongue limit. I am perhaps not a stickler for the numbers, but this one seems cut and dry---"this hunk of metal is rated for X".

Am I the only one that finds it strange that the tongue weight to gross weight ratings on the Equalizers is 10%? It seems generally accepted/recommend to have 10 to 15 % of your trailer weight on the tongue, so it would seem that you aren't really going to tow (within the ratings) a 10k trailer with the 10k hitch, nor a 14k trailer with the 14k hitch. I would think the 10k hitch would be rated for up to 1500 lbs tongue weight.

Don't suppose I really have a question here, but the ratings leave me a little puzzled.

Probably marketing. Just like the trailer manufacturers seem to like to advertise the bare minimum hitch weights (10%) for trailers when they will always be more, and auto manufacturers advertise tow ratings that will almost always be less.

While tt's generally need 12-15% tw for a safe, stable tow, open trailers are usually happy (stable tow) if they have about 10%. Enclosed car trailers I would believe are similar to our tt's.

Maybe that is why??? Same with the manufactures using a 10% tw rating since they generally rate for open trailers as I understand. I would have to double check, but the new(er) tow rating testing is set at 10% also.
