suggestions on f150's

I am new to site and was hoping for some insight on peoples towing experience with F150's. I just purchased a White Hawk 24MBH (5455lb dry)... however haven't purchased a truck yet (I know, a little backwards). We're looking at the Ford F150 used (2010 or newer) but I've read mixed reviews on whether it can tow. We live in Colorado so more mountain driving then anything. Anybody have a F150 towing around 6500lb's? Which one and how does it do?

thanks so much for the insight!

I tow with an older Bronco but when you purchase a truck make sure the differential gear ratio is for towing (4.10:1) or plan on changing it. I tow a 27DSRL at 7,000 lbs and changed my gearing from 3.55:1 to 4.56:1 and went through the Eisenhower tunnel last summer without a problem.

Another vote for the Ecoboost here.

I am a devoted Ford guy and although I just purchased my first TT and haven't taken delivery yet, I have towed the same one I purchased (28BHBE) for a friend several times. it is 6500 lbs dry.

I have the 3.5 EB, with HD Tow Package and 3.55 gears. I can't say it was the easiest tow I've ever done but with the equalizer WD hitch it towed pretty well.

Make sure the gearing is 3.73 or better(meaning higher number) if you are going to do any amount of towing no matter what you get!

EcoBoost with MaxTow option... 3.73 gears, integrated brake controller, 1800 lbs payload, 11000 lbs towing

Tow around 6500-7000 lbs with it.

Love it.

I have the 5.0 and prefer that over the ecoboost. A friend of mine with the ecoboost already has to replace his engine from towing a 7000lb trailer loaded. His blew with only 63 k miles on it. Yes they have more torque, but he said on the highway he always was worried about those turbos constantly whining. That's with the HD tow package and HD payload package. Guess he was right.

Another thing to consider is engine braking. The Ecoboost will get you up the hill in a hurry, but it has a hard time holding you back.

An F150 will pull your 24MBH even if it has the 3:55 gears. We are pulling a 20MRB with a 2008 Explorer Sport Trac with 3:55 gears. It has been over the Rockies and we are in New Mexico now.

The F150 should be a good fit. I would avoid the 2010 as it has the 5.4 V8.

TKHollywood, interesting about your friend's EcoBeast.

Ours has the Ecoboost with 3.55 gears, and easily tows our 5,500 trailer without any problems, actually much better than our old Silverado with the 5.3 and 3.73. Gas mileage is about the same while towing, give or take. Around here it's pretty flat and a little hilly in the west, but the truck does what we need it to do, and then some. Since it's also my daily driver, having gas mileage friendly gearing helps out quite a bit.

Also remember the ecoboost is a v6 and will have to have the turbos spooling all the time to pull a load... I would go the v8 route. I don't believe v6's were meant for towing

Well, we made it all the way to 12 posts before digressing down this rabbit hole. I guess that's an improvement! [emoji3]

Talking

Since we went astray...does it have to be a Ford?

Ok now that I poked a little fun, I would look at the 3.5 ecoboost or 5L V8 with the 3.73 gears. Both will work well. Depends on what your final budget is.

Really though...If you can swing it, I would get a Tundra and be done. The 4.30 gears seem to work well!

With 3:73 rear end and the HD Tow package/payload the engine is purrrrring along at 1700 RPMs and gets about 10MPG (towing) and 21MPG at 75MPH (no towing). So, the turbo RPM's are not that high. No strain at all and it is a nice feeling to know that it has plenty of power to spare when needed (in the Colorado mountains). With our 284BHS it climbed great, as for engine braking, it handled the 6% down grades ok, with a little braking needed. On the flat roads, you don't even know it is there.

The Ford forum members suggested for any towing, go with the 3:73 rear end as their have been complaints that with the 3:50 rear end and the one below it, the transmission would shift in and out of 6th gear on small inclines on flat roads.

I have always been a Big-Block (427..454..455) guy, but the EcoBoost changed my mind.

I have the 24mbh with about 6100 loaded. I have a ram 1500 with a v8 and 3.92 gears. I looked at getting the f150 before settling on the ram. I would not hesitate to pull with the f150 as long as the payload capacity was good with your family.

With an equalizer hitch the 24mbh pulls fantastic. The wide spaced wheels make it tow very straight. The f150 has some better features than my ram for towing as long as you get the good towing gear ratio.

All the 1500s can pull a ton of weight. Its just getting enough payload that is important.

My suggestions are:
2011 models and up (5.0l and ecoboost options = higher gvwr and towing vs 2010)
Max tow(3.73) and or max pay load package which gives you both. You can get max tow pkg wth out max pay load but can't get max pay load with out max tow..if that makes sense.) however buying used these are hard to find especially max pay load pkg. but worth the search for max tow at least.

in today's 150/1500 trucks it's amazing the difference in towing / payload capacities from one configuration to another. The same truck can be a difference of 2000lbs towing and 500-800 lbs of payload depending on options etc. Do your research and check out the specs of any truck you are looking at, its all on the Internet now a days. Certainly don't trust the salesman. Good example is a guy I work with just bought a new 2016 gmc 1500 Denali with the 6.2 litre crew cab. The dealer told him it could tow 12,000 lbs....can a Chevy/gmc 6.2 1500 tow 12,000? Yes. His tuck configuration? No. Actually his truck is rated for 9,100 lbs.

We have a 2010 with the 5.4L V8 and 3:73 rear end. Previously we towed a Jayflight 24FBS and now we tow a Whitehawk 27 DSRL.

Truck handled (s) them both with no problems whatsoever. And we live in British Columbia, Canada and have to travel through mountains all the time. No worries.
