SUV For towing Jayco 264bhw.

Hello, we have 2017 Discovery HSE and would like to know if that vehicle can tow Jayco 264bhw. I am a weekend camper and can't think of truck as a daily commute car. So I was looking at my wife's discovery which has pretty good tow capacity and seems like it could handle 6500 gross weight. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for reading.

Towing a travel trailer is rarely about the total trailer weight. It usually comes down to hitch weight and, and size of the trailer. I see specs on the Land Rover website for 7716 max towing, but can’t find a payload capacity. You should have a sticker inside your door pillar with the details. It’ll say something like “max weight of cargo and passengers should not exceed”. Find that and subtract the weight of every person, electronic device, backpack, pet, purse, tool, etc you have inside the vehicle. That is how much you have left for a trailer. Ignore the brochure dry tongue weight. Loaded for travel(batteries, propane, etc) you will probably be in the 650lb range. Then there is a weight distributing hitch weight of ~70.
If all those number work out, great you can carry the hitch weight.

A Jayco 264BH is nearly 30’ long. The force created in wind and large vehicles passing is substantial, and it will be hard to tame on that short wheelbase tow vehicle without something like Propride 3P hitch. This hitch is great, but is even heavier at ~180lbs, so subtract another 110 LBs from payload capacity.

The last thing to consider is that little v6 needs to rev high to be in its power band. That’s not necessarily bad, but it can make for a noisy tow that can wear you down.

Take a look at the payload sticker on your door. See how much payload you have and stay from there.

My 7.3 f250 almost feels too small with 40mph cross winds with my 264bh.

So from the responses I'm seeing. Is there any SYV that can tow 264bhw? Like 2018 expedition with HD tow?

for a suv? wow... that is more than a 1/2 ton pickimup... and equivalent to a 3/4 ton ...

can you upload a pic of the yellow sticker? maybe i need to go buy one of these...
looking online .. the gross is 5223lb and it weights 3877 for a payload of 1346lbs but that is just generic... and very good number... you need to know what you rear axle limit is as well..

Or a diesel expedition.

As mentioned before, just take a picture of your yellow sticker. and post it here to show the payload. As for the most capable SUV right now, take a look at the new Ford Expedition. With the new Aluminum body panel and minimal bells and whistles the payload stickers I have seen can get as high as 1700lbs which is great for an SUV. The eco-boost and 10sp have plenty of power to pull that thing over all mountain ranges in the US.

When you are looking at your new expedition, pay attention to the options and look at the yellow sticker for payload. For example, moon roof will deduct over 150 lbs from your payload. All fancy options etc add up, so just make sure if you are calling the dealer for the specific model have them take a picture. as the payload value does not show up on the window sticker.

Also, switching to LT tires from the soccer mom rated P tires makes a HUGE difference in towing stability and control.

Good luck.

Regards,

Eric Benson
