sway control...HELP
We bought our 28BHS in May. Before that I had a 19.5 ft Antigua hybrid. I never needed sway control on that, and did use a weight distribution hitch. Now with this new unit, I put a friction sway control on it. I'm not overly exicited about the friction style, and have decided to upgrade to the cam style. However, I'm looking on line at the different units etc, and see my style hitch..the truinion style. but on every picture I see, there is a "hook" at the end of the bar. My bars are straight to the end where the chain goes into it. It appears that the hook rests over the cam..will my straight bars work??? I'm towing with a 06 expedition, and in 3 Weeks I'm towing from NY to Orlando Fl.... I need to address this quick...... any insight anyone may offer is appreciated!

Can you post pics of your hitch? Some trunnion bars can be adapted to the dual cam and some not. Perhaps one of our towing guys can identify yours.

I've seen photos of bars that had been modified by adding a "kit" that added the hook to straight bars. I don't know who the manufacturer of the hitch was, but you can make a phone call to ypur hitch manufacturer and find out pretty quick if it can be done to your hitch. You may also be able to buy a set of bars in whatever weight you need. Etrailer sells them for Reese hitches for a couple of hundred bucks. That might be the easier way to go.

The more recent versions of the Reese Dual Cam are referred to as the "HP" versions, and these require a round or trunnion style spring bar with the radius at the ends to accommodate the round cam arm surface. The "HP" version are also attached to the A-frame via bolts or self-threading screws.
The original Reese Dual Cam attached to the A-frame via large U-bolts, and also contained a cam attachment that could be bolted to spring bars with the straight ends. If you can find this original Dual Cam (not made anymore) product it will work with your straight ended spring bars, otherwise you will need to update your spring bars for the "HP" Dual Cam versions.
This is what the original Reese Dual Cam looked like, and still a lot in use:

My dad used a friction type for years, he had bought the system for his small Jayco that weighed probably 3500?, I am now using the same system on my 22FB.
Took it to my hitch dealer to give it a check up, told him what I am pulling with it and told me that I should have no problems with it. I gave it 3/4 of a turn to tighten it, works great!
There are other systems out there, if you already own it, save your money to put in the gas tank.
