Sway control needed?

Looking for some advice. We’re planning a long cross country road trip next summer (COVID-19 pending). I have an EAZ Lift WDH, but no sway control device. Is it worth installing a sway control arm? And if so, is it just on one side? Are there limitations when turning with a sway control device?

Yes, you're Jay Feather X213 would benefit greatly with a friction sway control arm with your standard Eaz-Lift WDH. Most WDH manufacture's recommend two (2) friction sway control arms on TT's longer than 25 feet.

Tight forward TV turns aren't recommended...., and best to remove the sway control arm(s) when backing.

Which hitch do you have? My r3 has built in sway control.

Thanks! So turning with sway control arms in a cul-de-sac wouldn’t be possible? Is it like park the TV, hop out and disconnect the sway arms and then take the turn before hooking the arms ups again?

My WDH does not have the sway control built-in, unfortunately. My model is the Elite. Instead of adding dual sway control arms, perhaps I should upgrade to the r3 or r6.

Peter,

Not necessarily...., not all TV/TT hitch combinations are created equal.

I would visit a large parking lot and preform a practice TV turn. The objective is while making a tight turn you don't want the friction sway control arm to 'fully' compress. Have a spotter watch the sway control arm while making a slow tight turn.

My general rule is that if you asking the question, you have nothing to lose by installing sway controls. We have a 23' TT but installed a second sway control after one trip. If you need a sway control it means you are in a challenging situation. Safety first, they are not expensive. Yes there is a limit and you will learn it. I have bent 2 hitch heads due to tight turns, though the second was an emergency stop. We hit wind gusts that were over 50 mph going through a pass and were glad we had 2 sway controls. Just slowed down a bit, but virtually no sway. Also learned to check the winds before traveling.
