Tail No Longer Wagging the Dog
Finally got a chance to pull with my new 3500 Diesel - through the Rocky Mountains. Traded in a Chevy 1500 Silverado some months ago for the 3500. As I said the tail is no longer wagging the dog. Diesel is definitely the way to go when pulling.

Well, the increase from a 1500 to a 3500 suspension took care of the tail wagging. And that diesel took care of the pooch factor. LOL! I have a 6.0L gas model 2500HD, and I'm thinking about an upgrade some day. But I'll probably opt for a Ford. There are plenty of fairly new, used F350 diesels without dual wheels in the rear. The GM version is rare and pricey.

I went from a 1500 5.3 to a 2500 6.0 gas, so I took care of the tail wagging, too. I wanted a diesel, but they were just out of my price range. Maybe I will go diesel one day, but if not I'm good with what I have.

Diesels are also the only way to go when slowing down. The exhaust brake should make you smile. Congrats on the Duramax.

Diesels are awesome but, prepare your wallet for a hard hit. As well as maintenance after the warranty. But they are pretty BA!

That is because Ford has had a HUGE problem with engines. The last 2 generations of the ford diesel have been problematic.

The long-term maintenance costs are the BEST reasons to go Diesel! By 200,000 miles a gas engine is worn out and must be replaced.
Diesels at 100,000 miles are considered "just broken in". 200,000 miles is a non-event. 300,000 miles is when you start getting into 'noticeable wear'.
Getting 500,000 miles from a Diesel is not a surprise.
Spend the bucks up front. Get a good one. Maintain it well. The body shell will be rusted away before the engine is worn out!

That's my thinking. I've always said that I never worry about the Duramax or the Allison, just the rest of the truck

Honestly I really didn't have a problem with the way the 1500 handled the TT. It was the squeamish 5.3L gasser and transmission hunting that was annoying to me. Accelerating onto the highway was a problem. On a trip to FL the transmission never reached 200 deg but I would be concerned pulling through the rockies like on my last trip. Most any 2 to 4 hr trip, the 1500 would be fine.
