The magic O/D off buttom

Following my experience with the transmission overheating (previous thread: Transmission oil all over the place) I bought a scan gauge 2 and went out on another trip.

Had to travel about 4 miles in traffic to get out of the city, such that I had tranny temps of 195F by the time I hit the highway. At highway speeds things did not get much better with the occasional 220 on some relatively low grade inclines. Twenty minutes up the road I pull off on to a 2 lane road, to be slowed down by a truck travelling 35mph. Temps got up to 225 and stayed there. Thought about pulling over, and then remembered the over-drive off button. Never looked back. Temps fell to 180 and only briefly say 200 on a couple of hills.

The trip back was even better. Stuck to the rule of 50mph or lower keep O/D off, over 50mph turned it on. Did not see the temperature rise above 188.

Going out again this weekend to see if I can maintain these temperatures on a different trip.

will keep you posted!!

You may find that towing your trailer in OD is not recommended by the manufacturer When you are in OD the engine rpm's drop and the transmission may not produce enough line pressure to keep the bands tight and the tranny will slip and generate heat. Check the owners manuel.

X2

If your TV does not have "Tow/Haul" mode, I would not suggest towing in O/D at any speed. A few more gallons of fuel per trip is cheaper than a transmission overhaul.

Turning off the overdrive on an automatic transmission vehicle serves to increase the engine's / transmissions torque and efficiency when you are climbing steep hills or towing. Your engine will run cooler and like it better, too.

I bet you have Ford.....

Yes - I had a good friend who had a Ford-wheel-drive-exploder....got him some new tires just in time. He had the "Over-Dose" button for his tranny, too :hihi:

yes Its a Ford Explorer.

Manual says that this should be used to "avoid excessive shifting" does not explicitly mention it in the towing section (but it should!!)

From now on over drive off whilst towing will be my mantra to all RVers

Tranny fluid does not like heat. If you know your tranny temps have been up to 220 several times, I'd say you need to change your fluid.
