thoughts to my payload

Hi guys looking at a new 5er and here are the weights I have come up with.

Truck payload 2550
Pin weight. 1550 unloaded
Loaded weight 300 (2000 x 15% for additional stuff in trailer)
Hitch weight. 194

Leaves me with 500lbs left

I weigh less then 150lbs
Wife less then 150lbs
Kids together 100lbs
500-250 leaves me 250lbs to spare

I know it's close but doable right?

Let's hear it...

Yes, it appears to be doable. Best bet is to load it up as you will be traveling to the scales and find out for sure. You may be surprised at the actual weight of everything once you are on the scale.

Wouldn't worry about it to much if you are a couple hundred pounds over. Truck Manufactures set a GVW limit, but the design might be double of that. Just find out what the weakest suspension link is and try to improve that area if possible. On the RAM 1500 it is the springs, so I added air-lift (which legally doesn't increase the payload) to keep the combo level when I'm a couple hundred pounds over. Now you will hear a lot of comments from some on this forum (experts) that it is illegal and insurance issues etc. But they are probably overloaded a bit themselves. I would not recommend overloading vehicles but use common sense and be sure the driving characteristics are acceptable and comfortable.

If it was me I wouldn't do it, your math on the humans was wrong it should have been 400# leaving you #100, and TT always end up weighing more than listed. Payload limits are listed for a reason, I valve my life and family to much to cut it so close, not worth it after an accident happens. When I see someone giving advise that you will be ok tells me they know nothing but how to give bad advise.

Why guess....., take your TV under loaded conditions (full fuel, passengers, etc.) to a CAT scale and weigh it. Subtract the CAT weight from your TV's specified GVWR....., that will be your "available" payload capacity. CAT will take 1 minute and $9.

Next account for the 5th wheel hitch weight and then figure 20% to 25% of your future FW's (estimated) gross loaded weight for the "loaded" pin weight...., subtract these weights from your "actual" available payload capacity.

Your post states your are "looking at", but your "Signature" states you have a "FW on its way"...? What FW model?

If the FW is already on a dealer's lot refer to the yellow sticker for the "as-shipped" UVW, then start adding dealer adds, cargo weights, fluids, etc.. Ignore published UVW's (web sites, brochures, etc.).

I didn’t count myself 150lbs because that is already fiqured in for the diver.
Also if I had to I could switch my hitch for an Anderson Ultimate hitch (aluminum weight of 50lbs)so that would give me additional 150lbs leaving me with 350lbs left over.

Good advice on using the scale. Unfortunately don't have time to weigh the truck before I get it. However once I get it I'll weigh the works. I'll have to brush up on that thread.

Trust me I know it's important to stay with in the trucks limits. I don't think I would really have 2000lbs of stuff in the trailer so went heavy on the numbers to begin with and probably pick up another few pounds for the wife and kids but allowed for growing. When I pack the trailer I going to weigh everything I put in there. I bet you I will have the most weight in food and adult beverages... keep your opinions coming...
Thanks

It's currently between the 29.5bhds jayco or the 28bh reflection. They wife and I keep going back and forth. Maybe I should start a thread on which when to get lol... unfortunately if I get the grand design I will miss this forum however I'll probably keep visiting and giving input when I can. FYI Jayco does make a nice rig.

I think if you are worried about 250-350#, just weigh the combo with all tanks empty and make sure your DEF and Diesel tanks are on E too! Your truck will never even care if it is over on the rear by even 1,000#. Remember, the rear axle, tires, frame, brakes and everything else are probably the same as a SRW 1 ton with the only exception being 1 or 2 more leaf springs.

I am not too worried about being at the max. I just hope I still have the same enjoyable time pulling as I do now. My x23b with 81 mph speed rated tires I would pull at 74mph without even noticing it back there. I have just ordered timbrens to help keep the truck from sagging too much hopefully not at all. I guess I will find out.
