When I was driving my F150 I used tow-haul and didn't allow OD unless I was on flat ground. You can hear and feel a truck that is lugging based upon to-much work for the gear it's in.

tow haul question

What kind of truck? I can't see sig on mobile app. On my 2500 I put it in drive and push the tow button and the Allison takes care of everything else no matter what the terrain is..... No lugging. No gear hunting. So I guess it depends on truck and terrain.

On my F350 i always use OD. There is no specific overdrive position to select. The D position is overdrive. It has a 6 speed transmission. On my old F250 (2001) the manual stated to only use tow/haul mode with the transmission in D not OD.

My '08 Sierra in TH mode allows for OD to be used. I tried it on my fist trip out this year just for grins. I think with the 6 speed trans it locks out OD though. I never tow in drive anyway. So my Sierra is a 4 speed, I tow in 3rd and TH mode on.

MyTV is an '05 Ram 3500. Towed a 12000 pound HitcHiker, now a 7500 pound max WhiteHawk with it . Always engage the TH button when towing, figure Dodge put it there for a reason, though I notice with a diesel engine, the truck gets underway and tows the WhiteHawk fine if I don't engage it.

I engage TH, put it in D, and go. Transmission is six speed, and it will eventually get to sixth once on the highway and up to speed, but I do find that it downshifts very quickly if necessary too. Per the manual, if I put the truck in anything but D or R, TH is over-ridden.

JLB, your truck has the 4L60E tranny. It is a 4 speed unit so towing with TH engaged in 3rd is appropriate. Not burning up the tranny is the benefit. I have had many vehicles with the 4L60E and I always towed in 3rd. Adding an auxiliary trans cooler if you don't have one is a great idea. Look ahead of the A/C condenser for another cooler. If there isn't one, you only have the radiator cooler and it is marginal at best when the truck is empty.

Use OD until your transmission starts to hunt for the right gear then manually downshift.

You will find that most people towing in OD have 3/4 and one ton trucks with heavier transmissions. Your transmission will last a lot longer towing in 3rd.

My 2011 F250 has tow haul and I hate it. I just run it in D, if tranny starts shifting alot, I drop it in M 4 or 5 and run it flat out. If you have an OD option, I would not tow with it on. There ain't enough flow of oil going to the cooler, the OD clutch pack will fry even if you have an extra capacity cooler. I tried towing in OD once with one of my F150's, undercoating on the floor boards was sizzling around the tranny.

In general, the TH button just change the transmission shift algorithim in the truck's computer allowing up-shifts and downshifts to occur at higher RPMs.

my '99 suburban K2500 didn't have a TH mode, but towed better and RAN COOLER when I used 3rd gear for everything but flat open interstate.

I now have a truck w/a TH mode. I still don't do a "set and forget" with it. If the transmission is hunting, I will manually downshift and keep the engine between 1500-1800 rpm.

Not true with my dad and his 2002 F150 and his 7000# 5er. He just uses D and lets the truck do all the work. 150K miles later and only normal maintenance.

Just keep your fluids fresh, watch the engine temp and don't drive too fast.

With both the previous truck (03 Silverado 4spd) and current (2012 Silverado 6 spd) I put in drive, hit tow/haul, turn on the headlights and proceed. The transmissions took care of when to shift with no problem.
