I towed the octane 273 to fla. and back from ny never once in tm. Got 8.5 mpg both ways. A little disappointed. I'll have to try it on the trip out west this summer. Oh, duramax/allison.

We do when climbing or descending grades in the mts/hills.

Also when slowing for stops and starting out again.

On the open flat roads in cruise control we are turning at 1500rpm and TM not necessary.

If I head east from the house, towards the flatlands, I seldom engage TH. However, if I go west when I pull out of the drive, I'm always in TH. I think Allison owners have the advantage of choice. Any other tranny and I would always use TH mode.

You are towing a 7500lb trailer with a Duramax. It probably hardly even notices it. In your case I would leave it off in the flats (better mileage)and engage it on hills and mountains to take advantage of the exhaust brake.

With the 6.2 gasser that we have tow mode is always engaged while towing and even when hauling heavy stuff in the bed. I don't want my transmission hunting for the right gear.

Cheers

I use mine almost all the time. When traveling on flat ground I often take it out of tow haul mode but it is very handy when on flat ground if you need to make a quick stop.

If you need to stop and don't put it back in TH, you could miss an opportunity to stop in time.

I use tow mode all the time, it is really good for breaking during down hill travels.

When I pull my FW or TT I use Tow Mode. When I tow my 2 ATV's I don't, they don't weigh enough even with their Trailer.

Smile Tow Mode

We have an 01 Astro Van and always tow in "tow mode" it keeps the trans from shifting too early and keeps it out of OD. I don't know if any other manufacturers offer a tow mode, I am not sure that GM still offers it.

TH anytime the trailers behind me. The shift pattern changes but on the flat n level without wind @ 63/65 mph, Mine will find 6th and the RPMs drop to ~1700

Agreed. DH usually tows, but when I do - first thing he checks is that I've remembered to engage it.

If the trailer has brakes, surge or electrical, I use T/H mode ON, no brakes T/H mode off.

Manual transmission here. No tow modes, making it my own choice and feel of the truck as it drives. However, being a heavy duty truck, 1st gear is a "granny" gear so normal driving is always starting in 2nd gear, and whenever I am towing, I start out in 1st gear.
The downside to a manual transmission is when pulling grades my speed drops off sooner and I end up having to downshift sooner and usually pull a hill slower than the automatics transmissions unless I really want to high RPM push the hill. The advantage is that I get much better gas mileage than the automatic transmissions.

100% of the time in TM. My specific generation does make it into OD once at cruise. What I love about my TM is that if I touch the brake my engine will DS one gear and slow without using the brakes. Another touch of the brake and another gear drop. If I tap the accelerator, one gear up and so on. Makes going downhill a breeze and keeps the brakes cool for when I really need them.

You should use the Tow Mode all the time. Running the engine at higher RPMs will not hurt it. If your TV has a 4:10 gear, you can get away with running in OD on flat ground. Anything else will burn the trans up. Shifting under load, especially in OD kills transmissions. The OD clutch is not made to with stand torque.
