As others have stated, real world mpgs are probably 1 or 2 off from the v-6 to the v-8. I'd go for the v-8 if I was buying a Ram.

The engine braking on a 5.7 will be much better as well.

Steve76,

We have the x17z and tow it with a 2009 Ram 1500 Hemi Quad Cab. We also tow a 22 ft. boat. Great truck and we're getting about 11-12 MPG on the highway with the TT. It's smooth and has power to spare. With the anti sway hitch which came with the pre owned x17z you hardly feel the TT back there. Get the Hemi you won't regret it.

Re: tow vehicle

The hemi would be my choice, but I am a bit biased

The pentastar will perform admirably for what you want if that's the route you choose. Mated to that 8 speed, it has some pretty impressive abilty for a NA 6. I love that 8 speed, but it's tied to a Hemi in mine.
