Tow Vehicle: Breaking in a new engine
Any suggestions on how many miles to put on a new engine before towing. Had to replace my 5.3 Chevy engine with only 35K miles on it. We are leaving on a 3 week trip in a month and I want to make sure the new engine is "broken in" properly.

If it was replaced with the same OEM engine, then follow the break in procedures in your manual, or call the place that did the engine swap/rebuild.

I think I've seen and heard a recommendation for 1000 kms, which would be about 600 miles.
I've also heard that the thing that really needs breaking in is the rear differential gears.
Lots of trucks get put to work right from Day 1, and I don't think they see any issues, I wouldn't worry too much.

if it is an OEM engine, follow the OEM manual. If it was mine, I would drive it 500 miles, without a heavy load, do an oil change, then go have fun.

I would run it unloaded for 500 miles at minimum. The manual for my Ram 2500 said DO NOT tow anything before the 500 mile mark. During that first 500 miles, they wanted you to rev the engine frequently as well. So for about the first couple trips, I would frequently run short bursts at WOT. It was pretty fun!

As GrumpyDad mentioned the engine break-in isn't really needed it is the rear differential gears. When we got our truck new the manual said don't tow for 1000kms but we had a trip and started towing around 300kms. We haven't seen any issues with our truck.
Consider the thousands of commercial vehicles and work trucks that get loaded or hitched to something from day 1.
Don't worry too much about it.
Cheers

And Ram also says don't exceed 50 mph for the 1st 500 while towing. Really? Don't think thats going to happen.

When I get a brand new engine of any size (small engine or vehicle or whatever) I like to change out the initial oil early. On my truck, I drove it 1,500km and then had the oil and filter changed. On my power toys, I'll run them for an hour or two, then change out the oil. There are little bits of metal that flake off as the rings and everything else settle in, and I believe flushing that junk out will reduce wear and extend engine life.
For a brand new truck engine, I was told to vary engine RPMs for the first thousand clicks or so. Avoid cruising long periods at the same RPM. If you're cruising in 6th for a while, keep the same vehicle speed but bump it down into 5th for a bit, etc.

Last new one I had, they recommended 500 miles of various driving before towing. It was no problem because I put that much on it just getting the LineX bed liner and hitch installed.

My new Ford recommends 1000 miles before towing in the manual. That shouldn't be a problem. I already have 500 on it since I picked it up on Monday.

If towing then I follow the pre tow break in. If just driving it then I just drive. I don't go for that goofy speed vary stuff. I mean unless you're hopping right onto the freeway after purchase then most all speed is variable. I'm 65 and owned my fair share of vehicles. Never had an issue just driving the thing.
What is really stupid is Rams suggestion to not go over 50 mpg for the 1st 500 miles when towing after the 500 mile break in.

The Ram recommendation is specific to the rear differential as the motor needs no break in, at least with the CTD. Put the rear diff through a number of heat cycles and go nuts. I had 520 miles on my Ram before we hooked up and drove the next 1400 miles loaded down.

Just food for thought. Our 2004 Ram 2500 Cummins has 350+K on the original rear differential with nothing more than fluid changes. I don't remember for sure, but I don't believe that truck towed anything until it had 12K or 13K on it.
My 2007 Ram 2500 Cummins is having the rear differential rebuilt as we speak with 132k on the odometer. Again, I don't remember exactly what the mileage was when we towed with it for the first time, but it was only few weeks old and I remember that I pulled a flat deck with a pulling truck on it.
There is no way to know if I caused the current problem I have way back then. But this thread has me thinking a little.

Nice thing about working for a dealership is I pretty much have waranty for life on my vehicles. My new Ram came in from the factory the morning we leaving for vacation. Pushed it through the PDI so that I could have it that day. Chryslers recommended break in period is 800 km. I believe I had about 30 km on the vehicle when I got home that night and hooked the TT to it. No issues 48,000 km later. Would I tell a customer to do the same?? Probably not.
