Tow vehicle tires

I am pulling a 2015 Jayco WhiteHawk MRB 20 using a 2007 Tundra SR5 4.7 liter. Do I need 10 ply (load index E) tires on my tow vehicle? I will be covering some long distance trips 2000-4000 miles visiting National Parks.

Bon Voyage

You can if you want to, but your TT is pretty light compared to some of the ones that the members tow with heavier duty trucks. We've towed our 19RD with a 2004 Tundra TRD 4.6 liter, a 2010 TRD with a 5.7 liter, and now an F150 3.5 turbo. Sticker dry weight is 4140, with a max of 6200 loaded. We've never encountered any tire problems either with the stock tires, or replacement Michelin LTX M/S2s or Defenders. None of them were 10 ply.

I've always ran 10 ply tires on my F150. I'm a believer in over-tiring a vehicle. That being said, heavier duty tires are heavier, and it takes more power to swing them especially while towing something. With that 4.7L you would have to be careful going with a larger or heavier tire. I put 8 ply tires one size up on my old F150 with the 4.6L and noticed a reduction in performance.

On my wife's Ram 1500, we have always run LT load range C tires instead of the factory P-Metrics. There is a marked difference between the sidewall stiffness and stability.

I now have 10 ply Michelins on my 1500 Silverado. The P rated tires did just fine but I feel better with the heavier tires. I no longer worry about hitting gravel on the road and wondering if a tire is going to go down.
