Towing

Hi all I'm new to the forum, I have a 2012 f150 ecoboost with max tow, 157" wheelbase and 3.73 gears and was wondering if it anyone could tell me if pulling a jayco 33bhts that has a dry weight of 8700 lbs is safe. I have heard it shouldn't be a problem due to my truck being able to tow 11,200 lbs, but am still unsure if it will be alright. I used to have a 2006 f150 xlt and towed a jay flight 29 bhs and it was pretty good so I figure I should be ok with this truck and trailer combo any opinions?

That truck has a 2000# payload rating. The tongue weight of that trailer EMPTY is going to be around 1000#. Add the weights of your passengers, fuel, and any other cargo in the truck and you will be pushing the limit of its capacity without even carrying ANYTHING in the trailer.

Even if I pack light and no water in the tank? And I am also not towing in the mountains, I am gonna try to get a seasonal site next year so I will only pull it twice a year.

The one I am looking at has a dry weight of 8700lbs but the hitch weight is still 880... It says my payload is 1622 so with empty tanks and not packed excessively do you think it would be ok to travel bout an hour from town?

Figure a hitch weight of 15% of the yellow sticker ship weight. Jayco's published hitch weights are usually low. By the CAT scale, mine is 15%, although Jayco's data showed otherwise. So, 15% of 8700 lbs works out to be 1305 lbs.

Your TV's Payload Capacity is more important than it's Tow Rating ("Actual" Tow Ratings: http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...uot-Tow-Rating)

Since you have the TV you will be using, take it to a CAT scale under "loaded" conditions (full fuel, passengers, cargo, etc.) and weigh it. Subtract the CAT scale weight from the TV's specified GVWR noted on your drivers door...., the remaining weight is what you have for the TT's loaded tongue weight, WDH weight, or any weight not accounted for at the CAT scale......, eliminates the guess work.

Assuming the TT's 8,700lbs is off the yellow factory ship weight sticker, IMO you will be at 9,200lbs loaded with minimal cargo in the TT. For a 37ft TT you will want a loaded tongue weight of 13% to 15% of the TT's loaded weight for proper TV handling. Also, you will probably be looking at a WDH rated at least 1,500lbs.

IMO if a TV/TT combination is unsafe for a 2,000 mile trip, it's unsafe for a 1 mile trip.

Just food for thought.

Bob

The other option is to find someone at the CG with a 250 and give them a $100 to drop off in Spring and $100 to pick up at the end of the season.

A friend of mine spends quite a bit of each year in his TT and has a small business (consulting) that causes him to move once or so a year. He was having some reliability issues with his TV so he sold it and hires someone to move his 5th when he needs. He has a smaller car for getting the groceries and says he thinks it's cheaper not to own the TV (like boats and airplanes).

I drive a 18 wheeler for a living and there seems to be a big misunderstanding on what a Ford F-150 should be pulling. Most of what I see are grossly over weight and unsafe , just a general observation on what I see on a daily basis. I'll say the same for Dodge Durango owners as well , 30+ft TT's with the rear suspension bottomed out and the headlight shining straight up.

A lot of good suggestions here. General consenses is telling you that a 3/4 ton is pretty much what you will need for this trailer. Tongue weight is what is going to be the issue with your TV. Also consider that you will be happier if you are towing only 80 to 85% of your GCVWR.
