As someone who used to own a 1/2 ton , pulling a 4500 lb TT, I can tell you that when I went to the Dodge 2500 cummins diesel, it was the best change I ever made in RVing.
Just upgraded to a 5er. Almost wish I bought a 3500.

When it came to replace my half-ton pickup, I purchased a 3/4 ton diesel to pull my 1/2 ton Coleman pop-up. Four years later, I bought my current 3-1/2 ton TT and have been camping in it for 15 years now. I knew I was going to buy a TT sometime during the life of that truck and purchased the correct TV so when the time came (and it did), I was ready.
If you think even think you'll be towing something heavier during the life of the truck, buy a truck that will handle your future trailer purchase.

I towed our 5000 lb 213 with a GMC 1500 For four years mostly in the mountains of Alberta and B.C. The truck pulled the trailer okay but I was always coming up against payload. It didn't take much extra gear to put the truck over gross weight. Switched to 3/4 ton GMC (gas) this spring. I can now load all my gear no problem, and with the six speed it pulls the trailer like a champ. While the fuel mileage is not as good for everyday driving, I actually get better mileage towing with the 3/4 ton than I did with the 1/2 ton.

1/2 tons and rv's just aren't a good match. Regardless of how much they can pull, it's how much payload they can carry that makes them a poor fit.

I have a 2013 Ford F150 XLT SCrew 4x4 with ecoboost, max trailer and max tow packages. It has a payload capacity just under 1900lbs and 11,200 tow rating. We pick up our 2014 Jayflight Swift 267 BHS tomorrow. It should be a good fit, but I wouldn't go much bigger or heavier without stepping up in truck.

Just this evening, I was talking to my neighbor who owns a pretty large 5er. I told him my current trailer (also my first) is as big a trailer as I would ever want or need, and my next trailer would likely be smaller, he looked at me like I had a green antenna sticking out of my forehead. But then, I'm different than most RVers, I started big, and like many others, sometimes I find myself wishing I had more truck...

I was looking at the f150 w ecoboost.
Im pretty sure I need to start saving the downpayment for a Ram 2500. I will take the deisel over the 4x4 to lessen that sting.
Im towing it home w my Titan tomorrow - hopefully I can hold out to end of year .
A new truck and TT in same month-ouch

How much money are we talking about? It would have to be a pretty big chunk of change to get me to do a manual... Just MHO but I would very much rather just sit back and run the pedal...

I miss having a stick shift. Only reason I don't anymore is the DW can't drive a manual and it's just too much of a hassle to have a car she can't drive. If I had my choice is never own another automatic.
