Towing with a half-ton

I met a fellow recently who was towing a 5th with what looked like a Chev 1/2 T pickup. Asked about his nice looking truck and learned it was a '17 gasser, apparently they're installing 9 gear tranny. He's added air bags to level things out. I asked about the 5er and he said it scaled at 13k#. I think I recall him saying that he's getting 16mpg towing and 22 without the 5th.

Not sure I buy into all that but it seemed to be the only TV he had.

My guess is both salesman assured him it'd be OK - so it must be true.

At 16 towing, every trip must be downhill with the wind at his back. I wonder if he pays someone else to tow it back uphill for him to maintain those numbers?

13k 5ver with a 1/2 ton? His weights have to be over unless he's done some serious mods. I would think that hitch weight has to be near 2k, if not over.

There may be some exaggeration in those numbers. I have a pretty stout and beefed up 1/2 ton but there's no way I would even attempt to hook up to 13K lbs.

We live in Arizona and Department of Transportation has started pulling over trucks with campers and running them over the scales.Lots are overloaded and lots are getting tickets.According to this long haul trucker we talked to. Unless its a light weight 5th wheel it seems like most pin weights are near a ton.Ill keep my 06 1 ton Ram dully!Happy Trails

Yeah, sure, one of the urban legends... There is no legislation in place for DOT to pull over trucks with campers which are not operated commercially.

I agree with bono regarding the DOT and commercial vehicles. But I also know there are a lot of commercial pickup trucks delivering trailers that do not operate with their DOT# and company name displayed as required by law. They do get caught sometimes.

Also, when delivering commercially, pickup trucks must follow the same laws regarding going over the scales as the 'big trucks'. Occasionally I took a lot of grief from big truck drivers over the CB radio when in line at the scales. Most big truck drivers have no idea of the laws governing pickup trucks operated commercially.

The dude the OP talked to sounds like some of my buddies fishing stories. The 12 pound trout that got away, etc..

Overloaded would be kind. Our 5er scales at 12700# with 3000# on the pin. His 5er was not a lightweight and at 13k# I'd expect 3k# on the pin at a min. Anyway, that was his story and I guess he's sticking to it (tho a 12# bass could have been involved ). We pull ours with a 350 6.7 and I can't imagine a 150/1500 doing the job.

Several years ago G'year retired its older blimps in favor of newer tech. Maybe this guy got a couple and that's the airbags he's talking about.

I'd like to see how he's getting 16 mpg while towing -- y'know, without the downhill slope, tailwind, and resetting the truck's mileage computer while coasting.

If I do all that, I can get 30+ mpg while towing. Just saying.

Yeah he's full of you know what.

The 5.3 will get nowhere near 16 towing anything more than 4 or 5 k. Also, the standard trans is a 6 speed, with an available 8 speed in the high country or Denali with the 6.2.
