Trade up
Ok I have narrowed my choices to a 2011 F350 C/C 4WD Dually Lariat 6.7. Now just have to justifie if I really want it.
I have a 08 F350 C/C Lariat SB Dually now loaded. I love the truck but it's a Pig. I average 8 to 9 towing our 5th wheel (14,800 lbs) truck pulls no problems. Crusing about 12 to 13.5. The Pig has 52,000 miles and runs great, sad part is just put new rubber on all six wheels.
I know the new trucks see better milage but the upgrade is $ 25K.
Reading the fourms I figure new truck will get about 18 crusing and maybe 10 to 12 towing. I know the new one will have more power and torque. We use the truck for pulling our RV and sight seeing as we are retired.
Ok what are you thoughts on a New Ride
Thanks Wayne

Don't overlook the cost of Urea in any calculations

I`ve heard it said before, "Its Cheaper to keep her". Have you always only gotten 12 to 13 mpg empty? I thought the diesels did better then that.

I have a 2011 F250 with the 6.7L in it. It is a beast. My TT is light compared to yours, about 9k loaded. I get between 11-12 mpg towing, 15-17 empty around town. Very smooth and quiet engine with tons of power and torque. Don't worry about the cost of urea, $18.00 for 2.5 gal at the Ford dealer, cheaper elsewhere(Wally World, Autozone) and I fill my urea tank once every 6-8k miles. the tank is 5 gals. I think the urea at Wally World is about $12.00 for 2.5 gals.
The reason for the crappy mileage with the 6.4L is because of how the emissions system works. When the 6.4L engine goes into active regen to clean the DPF, it uses fuel from all 8 cyls. The 6.7L only uses fuel from one bank (4 cyls) to accomplish the same thing. The 6.4L has a reputation for poor fuel mileage.
Good luck with your decision.
Dave

Well I posted on about 6 fourms and most say they average 10 to 12 some less with the 6.7. That's towing so not much better than mine. Then as one guy said you have to buy DEF and that costs too. Well I'm thinking next year for the new truck I'll let the 6.7 engine Age a little.
We have about 23,000 miles planned for the truck and trailer by this time next year. We are rolling out to a southern trip for six weeks next month (Ohio, Georiga, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky) , then Texas for winter (4 months) and Alaska for next summer. Told the Boss Lady on the way home from Alaska we would stop to get a new truck. I got the Look !!

25K will buy a lot of fuel. Part of the benefit of a diesel is they will run forever. I would keep putting the miles on her, unless you just really want a new ride.

You only live once.
If the extra $25,000 won't make a difference to your lifestyle, then why not?

Put the payment $$$ in the tank.. the new ones get worse mileage and since I am assuming diesel they now need the DEF fluid which is another cost..
Try some simple upgrades to your truck like an AirRaid reusable air filter.. and if you keep your max speed at 65 your mileage will go up.

The 6.7 gets significantly better mpg than the 6.4 does.

Since we are talking duallys,we need a new "family" vehical and we see retirement in a few yrs.We tow now with a GMC 2500 HD and for our "new car" thinking dually now for those long trips when retired. We pull a 321RLTS with max wieght of 14500 & truck rated for 15200 max 5th wheel wieght .No problems towing or stopping, just think we would get close to max wieght on long trips and was wondering advantages to dually with a 5th wheel,no plans for a bigger trailer.Wife has driven a dually as "her" car before but we only pulled a small bumper pull rv back then and it was also a gas rig.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think towing into the head wind increases the weight of the trailer, so if your towing 14,500 and the truck is Max rated at 15,200 your over weight in a 30+ headwind.

Please explain that statement. I am totally confused.

Towing into the wind increases DRAG not weight.

Lets just say a "no wind" day,its drag and the faster you go the more drag deveopes so lets keep it simple or I wont understand .I get a small side to side sway at the hitch that I think would go away with the extra wheels.I realize more fuel,6 tires versus 4,just want a few +'s for duals.

I get the same mileage as my Dad's 2002 7.3L PSD. The myth of the new diesels getting worse mileage because of the emissions equipment is false.
