Trailer security

I was wondering what do others do for a security in their trailers. We often pull a 7x14 enclosed trailer behind our Greyhawk. I was thinking i would like to have an alarm system in the trailer just in case. I did find a nice one online by Dewalt, but not looking forward in paying a $20/ monthly monitoring fee.

I keep a GPS tracker well hidden in my trailer, if someone takes it the police will be right on their trail.

I guess the question is what type of security do you want? Prevent theft of the trailer, someone breaking in and taking stuff?

Around these parts, it seems theft of an enclosed trailer is somewhat common. At least I hear about that way more often than someone breaking in and taking stuff.

To prevent breaking in, use Good Quality locks, that are hard to tamper with. Look for something that is hard to use a bolt cutter on. Especially ones with a short shank

Prevent theft, a good wheel lock and tongue lock. Most tongue locks are fairly easy to break off with a long prybar.

The key element is to encourage someone to move onto the next unit.

There's no lock made that will prevent someone from taking a trailer or an RV, if they really want it. Slowing them down helps though. That's why I went with the GPS tracker and good insurance.

just make sure you have a good premium boy... and have a lock better than the next guy... if they want it they will take it.. but if one is easier to take than yours they will take that one...

I am actually more concerned about someone breaking in and taking stuff. Say having to stay in some wallyworld parking lot or truck stop and some one cuts the locks off the trailer while we are sleeping. We travel to races and motorcycles are in high demand by the hood-rat / bike life dirt balls. Since the trailer is rarely off the ball and attached to the camper i am not so concerned about the trailer being stolen.

I have the Heavy Duty door locks on the bar closer. but the weak link on the bar closer is the bar, it would be easier to cut the bar arm then to bother with the lock itself.

How about a small, fake security camera mounted on it?? Lol!

thank you

We have one of those units, they work well. But my goal would be to stop them from taking them. I really don't want to chase after the dirtballs

I have thought of this as there are cellular cameras out there that will text and call you with photos. There are even game cameras that will do the same thing. I think what i need is just a compact quality home alarm system. Something that is very loud and will cause the perp to run off.

Anyway to rig up an alarm thats activated with the door opening and closing?
Mount the noise/flash maker near where you sleep. When the door opens on the cargo trailer the alarm near you should be enough to wake you.

If your concerned while in the MH or near by, and not sending a cellular signal. It would be easy to make a simple hardwired system. Couple door contacts, a keyed power switch (like a garage door opener style), the use of your E-Brake battery. Don't forget a loud horn/siren that is hidden under the trailer.

You could even add a small flashing LED light by the door to remind you that the system is armed.

I bet for $75 to $150 you could have a nice DYI security system.

You might try one of the photocell alarms from Harbor freight, and put the chime in your rv. Might work, might not.

My Buddy swears by the Dewalt Mobile lock on his work trailer. He has 25K + worth of equipment so it’s worth the $220 and $20/ month charge. He’s caught thieves 2x attempting to steal his trailer.

On my enclosed trailer I use several layers of protection:

1) I cut the safety chains off leaving only 2 links on the trailer then use quick links to reinstall the safety chains. Most thieves will use the chains to pull the trailer away to a place they can defeat the lock.

2) On the receiver I use a ABUS 20/80 Discus lock. I cut an old receiver off and lock that in the ball socket. The lock is extremely difficult to cut off and the old receiver can’t be “broken off” like other options.

3) On the doors I use an an Alarm lock, if the lock is disturbed or moved it sounds an 130 dB alarm immediately drawing attention to the trailer.

4) As a final deterrent and bluff, I attach GPS tracking stickers on the trailer hoping the thieves move on.

As long as you don’t try and steal the camper or trailers it should stay nice and quiet!

It won't be me. I can tell you that far too many people set off car alarms and honk horns in the campgrounds already. Most of that is probably accidental, but I prefer peace and quiet in the campgrounds.

thank you all good suggestions. The Dewalt unit is what i was thinking about , they have a motion sensor that will mate with it as well as a cable lock. It is just the $20/mnth fee i did not want the burden of.

I think for my upcoming trip ill use a screamer lock and chain the bikes together inside the trailer. that seems like a good option till i get an alarm installed

We use a RING doorbell with a Verizon Jet pack to provide the WiFi. Internal batteries in both last over a week before needing a recharge.
