Tried to buy a truck
On the way back from Texas ( first of June )DW and I decided to retire my old truck. I will use it for my hunting and fishing adventures. I retired from a Chevrolet dealership after 35 years so I “ know people “. I went into the store and said “ hey boss I want to buy a new truck “, he said come back after the first of the year , all the trucks coming in are sold and I am getting a lot of $$ over msrp! That was his way of saying “ you ain’t getting a deal”. I was in the business long enough not to get “ the new car fever”. We will see what 2022 is like. I will continue this story at a later date.

Times in the vehicle market, just like RV's, are absolutely crazy right now. I get a call approx 2x per day from Camping World of Pittsburgh trying to buy my Jayco (no idea how they got my number. I've never spent a dime there.) an email once a week from the MB dealer trying to buy my Sprinter, and at least a text per week from the salesman that I purchased my F150 from. They are all begging for the inventory. I initially thought that this was only going to last a few months. There really isn't any end in sight at this point.

The chip shortage has created a shortage of new vehicles and high demand for used. I bought a 2016 Silverado in Jan. If I wanted to trade it now I could get $6-7k more in trade than I paid for it. Trouble is that I'd be paying a premium for what I'd be buying and be upside down in a year when the values drop again.

My youngest boy works at the 6th largest Chevy dealer in the country. No factory or dealer employees are getting any discounts.

I was offered $25K for my truck with 180K miles. If I didn't need a truck myself, I'd sell tomorrow.

People are crazy. Last year it was toilet paper this year it's vehicles.
I've thought about taking mine in to see what they'd give me. I could live without it until the prices came back down.
There is rumor that the manufacturers/dealers are going to change the way they keep stock to the 'just in time' theory (I think that's what it is) where the dealerships only keep just enough on the lot to keep people coming in and the days of dealing for a better price may be gone.

Competition is still competition. I would think if dealers are all going to start charging MSRP as part of the norm, then manufacturers will start to compete on MSRP. To wit, a comparably equipped Silverado 8k cheaper then the same Ford, maybe people buy more Chevy, and thus Ford starts to come down on the sticker.
Eventually free market economics will find its equilibrium.

Found New F-150 truck at my local Ford dealer ( F-150 Platinum 4x4 crew cab V-8 engine) . I had been looking for a New truck for a while. Sales Mgr. finally came out on lot and ask me if he could help me. I sad yes how much was this truck ? He said I would not be Happy with this truck because it had a V-8 engine, I told him I wanted a V-8 . He told me I needed a V-6 ECOBOOST engine if I was going to be Happy . I told him I only drive V-8 engines . He would Not give me a Price on the truck because he did not want me to be Un-Happy . I told He was Crazy don’t worry about my Happiness. And I went and bought me a New RAM a truck with a V- 8 HEMI engine and could not be Happier……..

I just got a call from my long time dealer (damn that sounds bad coming from a guy who spent 27 years in law enforcement) he had a special order F350 come in and the buyer walked away from the deal. I got X plan pricing and 1/2 the holdback. To top the deal off they gave me about 4K more than I paid for my current 2016 F250 when I bought it in 2016! I've dealt with the same dealer for over 20 years - the relationship paid dividends this time...

They want to buy my used Ram for more than I paid for it 5 years ago. The only problem is that they want WAY more for a new one to replace it. No thanks.

That's terrible treatment from someone who knows you.
I went and ordered a 2022 Super Duty. I traded in my 2019, got almost what I paid for it, plus I got to hold on to it until my ordered truck came in, plus they made a deal with me on the 2022, way lower than MSRP.
My dealer understands that right now they can make lots of $$$, but relationships are more important, so when a repeat customer comes in, you better keep them happy.

This is exactly what my dealer did and why I continue to do business with them.
They quoted the trade price without seeing my truck and based solely on my word. They know from previous experience how meticulous and anal I am about maintenance and appearance so they had no worries. I do all my own maintenance and repairs and buy most of my consumables and parts from them as well. The will most often price match or even beat some of the big online Ford parts dealers.
When the deal was done I asked them why they gave me what they did when I know full well they could have sold that truck for probably 5k over MSRP. Their response was they appreciate my loyalty to them and wanted to show some appreciation back.
I haven't always left there as happy as I did this time but always felt like I got at least a fair deal...

my brother just sold his 2019 Ram 2500 w/Cummings w/22K miles for 62K. About 2K more than he paid in 2019.. I just sold a 2014 Jeep Wrangler about 3K less than what i paid in 2014. The used car marked is hot right now. When i sold my jeep, i had 4 people in line for it. It's crazy.

There’s a lot of that going around. Had the oil changed last month at a large dealership in South Houston and their lot is normally packed with new trucks. Almost empty.

All the local Ford dealers around me are charging sticker for their trucks. Past customer, new customer, doesn't matter. Like my father used to say, "Money talks, bull**** walks."

DW says I don’t explain things very well. When I went in and talked to the Boss I said I wanted to buy a truck not that I needed a truck. If I needed a truck he would have cut me the best deal he could, but because I just want a truck his advice to me was “wait” if things get back to some kind of normal I will be able to cut you a much better deal. I chose to take his advice. It sounds to me like your dealer treated you very well and loyalty does have its advantages.

My local Ram dealer is selling what few Rams they have for $6K over MSRP and no haggling. I do my deals with the fleet salesman. I've dealt on my last 3 Rams with him and bought my last 2 from him. Known him for 9 years. We BS every time I go in for an oil change. He told me he has a close neighbor thats always bought from him. He recently bought a new Ram 2500 and my fleet sales buddy said while they gave him a super deal on his trade he still had to pay the +$6K. Ouch. Apples to apples I guess if you get enough for your trade.

I called my local dealer that I've dealt with for 15 years 2 weeks ago to trade in the DW's car and get her a new vehicle. They didn't have the color she liked in stock, but I found one at another dealer. I was told that the dealerships won't trade inventory anymore due to supply. So she's still happily driving hers...glad it was a want, not a need!
