Truck tow capacity

Hello

We have been campers for a good while now have had a couple motor homes and a fifth wheel which I towed with a Ram 2500 Diesel Cummings, since then we have sold our fifth wheel and also got rid of the Ram 2500. And just kinda quit camping for a while, now I have a 2017 ford f250 with the 6.2L (Gas) engine and a 3.73 rear end book saids I can tow GCVW is 19500#. We are getting back into camping now and been looking at Jaycos that weight between 8200 and 9400 lbs. that's unloaded weight. Just never towed anything that heavy with a gas burner. Just like to get some of you guys input on it. Think I would be ok towing 8200-9400 lbs with this truck.
Has anybody towed with a f250 gas burner?
Thanks

I tow about 10K with a gas burner but have 4.10 gears and its torque monster big block. I think what helps you is I only have a 4 speed and you probably have 6 speed and the extra gears help make up for lack of torque. I notice all the new 6.0 Chevy trucks make less torque than me but still have hefty tow capacity's so I figure its the extra gears that help.

We have a 2017 F250 Lariat FX4 with 3.73 rear, 6 speed and a 6.2L gas burner. We are towing our new 2018 10,000 lb Eagle HT FW with it. It is rock solid. No squat. Everything is level. We don't have all that many miles on it yet. Mostly flat land so far. Have not been through the hills so we can't offer any feed back on that. We set the cruise on 65 and forget it. On the flat land we get 8-9 mph. No different than what we got with our 27' TT. You should have no problem at all IMHO.

Welcome to the forum and back to camping.

You'll likely hear from a number of folks that you need to shop for a trailer based on the PAYLOAD of your tow vehicle. Salesmen, truck and trailer, will talk tow capacity, but it's the PAYLOAD limit you'll hit first.

PAYLOAD is all the stuff in and on your truck, in the truck bed, the hitch weight, plus the tongue weight (or pin weight) of your trailer. There is a sticker on your truck's door frame that has its PAYLOAD.

For travel trailers, the formula is .15xgross trailer weight=tongue weight.
For 5th wheels, the formula is .20xgross trailer weight=pin weight.

Hope this helps a bit while you're trailer shopping.

Agree with payload issue. Some will say air bags but I believe Timbrens are better. Additionally have a extra leaf-spring added.

You should have no problem towing in that range with a 3/4 ton truck, we tow a Jayco fifth wheel in that range with a gas chevy. We have towed through the smokies several times without a problem, being a gasser it will need to wind up more than a diesel to get into the power band.

I towed my 10500 lb 330 rsts with my f250 gasser 800 km through the rugged mountains of bc to its forever spot at cluculz lake. It was legal but is pushing the limits of being comfortable . Straight flat roads were fine, mountains sucked. I've owned a 2011 1 ton ford 6.7 diesel that was way better.

Get a good WD hitch for it. I believe maximum tongue weight is 1200. Lbs so don't put a lot of stuff in your truck.

I doubt payload will be an issue with the '17 F250 gasser. It probably has 3000# or more of capacity. Pretty much any trailer in that range you are looking at will be a relatively easy tow. The '17 6.2L gasser has more power and torque than the previous version so have fun shopping for a camper and then towing.

Just for information, the use of air bags or timbrens will not change the sticker on your truck. The weight rating from the factory is the one that is important in court.

Welcome to JOF

Now that you have both the TV/TT combination, when you get an opportunity under loaded conditions visit a CAT scale for a weigh in......, I'm sure folks will be interested in your results.

The CAT scale will provide you with a wealth of info, including that you have your WDH dialed-in for optimum TV handling.

CAT scale how-to: https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...v-tt-3871.html
