TV/TT Towing Incident: Sway?

Referencing the 'Towing Safely: What "Sway" looks like' sticky at the top of this forum section, the following TV/TT towing incident may also been the result of a sway event (actual root cause yet to be confirmed):

Further discussion on the above photo: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fu...d/25440141.cfm

All of the STICKY's at the top of this "Towing and Tow Vehicles" forum section are very helpful in minimizing the potential of an unwelcome Towing event.

Be careful out there folks.

Bob

Yikes Bob, there is certainly a "discussion" going on over that one. Not a pretty sight.

I always wondered what the top of an Airstream looked like.

Under the right circumstances ANY trailer can cause sway and end up like the one in the pic. Most victims of sway are people that havn't experienced it before or people that just don't do the right thing. Just touching the trailer brake can straighten things right out if it hasn't gotten to far out of hand.

Yep, especially over at the Airstream forum.

I won't speculate on any of the causes of this one (read all the threads etc) but will say that I have the Hensley marketing materials; have you seen the large airstream they show in this video being towed by a Lincoln Continental?

It shouldn't sway with that hitch unless:

A. Something broke (hitch or TV).
B. Trailer was loaded so poorly (tail heavy) that the hitch couldn't compensate for it.
C. The trailer is simply too much for TV and/or hitch combo.

I have purposely made abrupt lane changes (deserted hwy) and dropped wheels off shoulder (again deserted stretch of hwy) to see how my setup reacts...this was after the scales though when I knew exactly my tow parameters. This was when my drop-shank was still not quite low enough to be level. I have yet to experience any sway.

There are two types of RV'ers, Those that have experienced sway and those that will.

One possibility comes to mind: The Hensley by design exerts a lot of lateral force against the TV's receiver pin box...., so if the receiver assembly was compromised in any way (weldment issues, etc.) this could cause the pin box to break away from the receiver. The statement by the driver that the TT separated from the TV prior to the sway event makes me think this.

Just thinking out loud.

I notice that the police in the picture is a Texas State Trooper... any idea where this accident occurred?

I added a WDH to my Sierra Denali/StarCraft even though the tt didn't even bring down the rear of the TV 2 or 3 inches. The TT is apx 6750 and the Hitch is 730....and even though the Denali handled it with ease, I wanted just a little extra....that and the sway bar already attached.

On Monday, the day after the races here in NH, a TV/TT went sideways in the road on a beautiful day, no wind and dry. I am glad it happened after I secured for the day, but would have loved to hear the story. Will fill you all in when I talk to whoever was assigned. My wife told me it looked like a Ford 250 and a 30 footer......my guess....no WDH to begin and no swaybar?
