TV upgrade WDH still needed?

Hello fellow Jayco peoples. I recently upgraded my 2015 Toyota Tacoma to a 2016 Ford F150 XLT and I am trying to decide if I still need to use my WDH. I have setup the WDH since I am still using it for the sway bar but, I am not sure I really need to WDH bars attached.

Without hooking up the WDH bars, my front end only comes up about a 1/2 inch and my rear sags about 3/4 of an inch. Is the 1/2 inch rise on the front end enough to justify the WDH to bring it down?

My opinion:


Use the WDH as long as you have it.


Just because you are much more within the safety margins of your new tow, doesn't mean the added bit of having your tow closer to 'normal' when towing, won't be a really nice thing to have!

Test drive it. Does the steering feel normal or is it "squirrly"? A WDH is to put the weight back on the front wheels to regain lost steering control. A nice 35 mph cross wind will help you determine real quick how much steering loss you have.

There is a spec in your owners manual in the towing section. GM says to adjust the hitch to bring the front fender back to stock height. I believe Ford says to adjust it to bring it half way back to stock height.

Ignore rear sag. You will always have some. That's why the truck has a "raked" look.

Thanks for the responses. I did a test drive with the WDH disengaged and it felt fine, actually I hardly noticed the trailer behind me. We are heading out for the 4th and I will engage the WDH bars to see if it makes any difference. I do have to say, it is quite nice not to have to use my mirror extenders

I agree with the others, continue to use your WDH with the new TV. The WDH may require a little re-adjustment to match your new TV's suspension.

You may not notice a difference w/o the WDH spring bars in use under ideal towing conditions....., but less then ideal can be a game changer.

The front end of my 2016 F150 raised about 3/4's of an inch without my WD hitch. Maybe it was a mental thing but it just didn't feel right to me. I won't tow my trailer without the bars attached. If nothing else it's peace of mind for me...

Will depend on your tongue weight. When I towed my 16 ft fiberglass trailer with a 350 lb tongue weight, there was absolutely no squat and a WD would have just put extra stress on my trailer frame with negligible benefit. Your tongue weight will also let you know whether you want to re-distribute any weight off of your rear axle. You may get a little less bounce with WD hitch engaged as well.
