Un-hitching Question

This could be because everything is still new and just needs time to break-in, but I'm having a miserable time trying to uncouple the TV and TT, to the point that I've had to pull the receiver pin and drive away. The hitch head always ends up on the ground, so I know the coupler is unlocked. I try to ensure that the ball is centered in the coupler (so there's no pressure on it), but that doesn't help. Never had an issue like this before with new utility or boat trailers. Any advice is appreciated...

Do you have upward pressure on the ball from the hitch before you unlatch? It may be the sequence you undo the WD spring bars. Just a thought!

You might be having some powder coating / binding issues with the ball lock hardware....the ball lock might not be fully retracting until the angle force of the hitch head dropping. Maybe clean it and try some powder graphite?

I have a habit of slamming my ball lock latch back and forth several times before hitching up after lengthy intervals.....I don't know why - maybe it's something I picked up as a kid from watching my relatives who dropped boats into saltwater all the time. Maybe that will help you get broken in.

Have experienced the same with our 2014 WH 30DSQB.....sometimes good...sometimes bad....sometimes I think it's just a slight angle problem even though it looks to be free and have good clearance.....I think as they wear some it will get better......just bought a new TV and have got to re-align hitch anyway...hopefully my problems will go away.

Do you have your hitch setup correctly. There should be an angle on the head, we had the same problem with ours initially until my brother-in law helped me get it setup correctly. If you read the instructions for the hitch it will explain the correct pitch. Also lots of grease up in the head as well will help the break in process.

I used to just bounce on the bumper when mine would stick.

Thanks all! Cleaned and lubricated the whole assembly yesterday and unhitched with no problem when we got home this afternoon.

All I had with me was Vaseline, but it did the trick.

It seems that hitch angle and lube are the most important things to check for when you have a problem with the ball sticking to the hitch. I use motorcycle spray chain lube. It is sticky and stays put.

I lube the ball with bearing grease a few times a summer. When the ball is not in use I place a 9 oz solo cup over it to keep accidently getting into the grease. The grease on the ball will get into the latch mechanism and will help quiet some of the hitch noise.

+1. I used to have problems unhitching because the latch would get stuck. Now I put a nice thin coat of marine general purpose grease on the ball. This has solved plenty of problems including any difficulty unhitching.

An old timer told me to wiggle the back end of the TV from side to side and the ball might just fall away. It seems to work most of the time.

I know you solved the problem with lubrication, but also make sure the chocks are tight to the tire. When you lift a trailer it does move a bit. If there is a slight incline or decline there's enough pressure at the coupler that it could make it stay coupled until the loud bang when the truck drops away.

I have found when backing a trailer into an incline if you will set the wheel chocks on the trailer and let the truck roll forward a bit and set the chocks you will have a much easier time releasing the trailer from the hitch.

Same here. I've jump on the bumper to get that thing unhitched. I think the force has to outweigh the friction. I have not used lube, yet...
