Underslung?

Picking up our new 32bhds ina couple weeks. Been reading pages and pages of threads! Called my dealer last week to order the blue ox 1500lb hitch, not knowing what underslung is. After reading soo many threads about the hitch I now wonder if I need the underslung head or if the trailer is a conventional setup. Sales person never mentioned anything.

The term 'underslung' means the TT ball coupler is mounted (welded) to the bottom of the TT A-frame...., which it is on the Eagle, and Jay Flight 32BHDS.

Guess I had better call the dealer and make sure they have both in stock in case I do need the proper head.

My 28BHBE had an "underslung" hitch.

Indeed there is a difference in the Blue Ox hitches between the heads. I contacted Blue Ox to verify, and she said yes, it's the angle of the bar sockets.

Find the Blue Ox part number and verify by that number with the dealer.

https://www.blueox.com/products/swaypro/bxw1550-s/

Looks like in the 1500 lb range, the standard hitch head is "BXW1500-S" and the Underslung head is "BXW4012"

Called and talked to the dealer today. The parts manager informed me that the Jayco trailers are high enough that the underslung head is not needed. It sounded like he has fielded this question many times before!

Perhaps not strictly NEEDED, but certainly the hitch made for underslung hitches would be optimal.

I would wonder if he said that because he doesn't have the other part on-hand and is not willing to get one ordered for you?

I've had dealers and parts managers straight up lie to my face. Either because they were ignorant (didn't know better) or because they didn't want to put in the LEAST amount of extra effort to get it done right.

I would give Blue Ox a call and ask them which one is "proper" for your rig and ensure that the Jayco sitting higher is enough accommodation for the hitch the dealer wants to install. Blue Ox customer service has been excellent in my experience.

It’s more than a height difference between the hitches. Like camper bob mentioned, I believe the angle of the socket and bars are different. I’d call Blue Ox as suggested or tell the parts manager you want the correct Blue Ox underslung WDH....

Yes, the angles of the sockets are different.

Here's where that makes a difference: If you have a "top-mounted" hitch point on your trailer, the rearmost ends of your bars don't reach as far below the line of the frame with a standard hitch head.

If you have an "underslung" hitch, and you use the standard hitch head, the rearmost ends of the bars will be much farther below the line of the frame.

See attached crude drawing. Red line is spring bar, vertical box is hitch head, horizontal box is trailer frame, blue arrow points to gap between spring bar end and frame.

Will it work? Yes. BUT you could face clearance problems from your bars protruding further below the frame. Also, the recommended number of links in the instructions will be different if you're using a hitch head not matched to the trailer hitch mounting position. Not necessarily deal breakers, but I personally would want the right hitch for my application.
