wd hitch

So this may be a stupid question but i am fairly new at towing my camper but do drive a tractor trailer for a living so my question is

i am buying a 21 f250 to tow my 18 jayco 28rls, its max loaded weight is 8800# and towing capacity is 14,000 lbs

my question is if i get a heavier weight dist hitch then i need will it make for a rough ride? like towing an empty trailer or dead heading a tractor can sometimes be brutal, will it have the same effect ??

Not at all. It should smooth out the ride considerably. The Tractor of your combo is setup to always have a weight on the back wheels, so it gets rough when there is nothing there. A pickup is setup to ride well with no to moderate load. With a heavy trailer hanging off the bumper, the steer axle becomes too light and the drive axle springs are (near) fully compressed. The WD hitch will go a long way toward evening that out, moving weight back to the steer axle and restoring control, and taking weight off the drive axle improving suspension travel and handling.

ETA: by 'heavier' do you mean able to handle a heavier trailer? Get a hitch with the correct weight range for your trailer. Many WDH models allow you to purchase new trunnions/bars with a heavier rating if you upgrade your trailer. You don't need to re-purchase the whole thing. A too heavy rated WDH will be difficult to setup properly for a light trailer.

I pull my trailer at just about that weight with a 2016 F250 and use a 14K Equalizer WDH. I have no issues or complaints about either. I went with the heavier hitch weight because of the higher tongue weight.

IMO it won't towing the 28RLS as long as the WDH is properly adjusted under your typical TV/TT loaded conditions.

Worst case scenario with the 28RLS loaded to its 8,800lb GVWR = 1,144lbs to 1,320lbs (13% to 15%) recommended loaded tongue weight range. A WDH rated at 1,400lb - 1,500lb would be ideal towing at the TT GVWR, and wouldn't be overkill for the lower gross loaded weights of the 28RLS and associated loaded tongue weights.

My 'prior' Eagle TT had a 9,000lb GVWR and I transferred my 1,500lb rated WDH over to my present Jay Flight with a 7,500lb GVWR without any issues.

I know your familiar with CAT scales, but the following JOF link may be helpful in dialing-in your WDH adjustments with your new F250:
