Weighing your rig. Cat scales or...

I see Cat scales at the local truck stop recommended a bunch for weighing your rig. There's an alternative, at least here in Wa. The weigh stations on the highway where they weigh semi trucks. Frequently, when they are closed they leave the outside display on, or turn the inside display around facing the window so it can be read from outside. If I'm curious I just pull in and check. I've weighed my pickup without the trailer, the entire combo empty and the combo full of water and food etc. If you time it right it will be so deserted you can make changes right on the scale without being in the way.

Food for thought

Do the highway weigh stations have seperate scales (pad) for the steer, drive, and trailer axles? If not, you can still get all the seperate axle weights, it will just take a little more effort than at a CAT Scale.

That is a nice alternative to paying for the CAT Scales.

Good idea. In our state they don't recommend private haulers pull in. Nice of them to do it though.

Most of the weigh scales up here (Canada) are like that. I always pull in when they are closed. I have only seen a single pad though so I weigh each axle separately.

There is even one that is just a scale and a readout on the side of the road. Not manned.
I have never paid to get weighed here. Alberta and BC.

Yes Canada is a free country(only in our mind)....lol.
Any one uses a Sherline Tongue Weight Scale?
I still using the Bathroom Scale (when the boss is not looking) with 3:1 home made setup. I still waiting for Sherline Scale to be on Amazone.ca.
The problem with a TT you only have to measure once after fully loaded and after that it always will be close around that figure.
With utility trailers it is different because load weight changes around to much, that's why you see them more often sway on the road.

I'll use the scales in either Oregon or Washington if I need to. I just make sure they're closed to commercial traffic before I use them. Like PNW said, they leave the scales on all the time. It's just a matter of running one wheel at a time onto the scales to get all four corners.

I think the Sherline is a good investment. I have one and carry it with me when traveling. It's quick and easy to check the tongue weight under different circumstances you may find yourself in - like having to run for a while before you can dump the waste tanks.

I picked mine up off Amazon last year and at the time they only had the 2000lb unit. I see now they have the 1000lb and 5000lb units too, and there is a huge price discrepancy between the various sellers.

ttacasc; You can buy the 2 other gauges from Sherline direct, the unit itself is all the same for all 3. That's what I am going to do buy direct from Sherline in CA. On Amazone prices vary to much plus the shipping is high.

Thanks for the tip ALJO. I'll have to look into that as my tongue weights are always going to be well under 1000lb and the 1000lb dial may be more accurate. As for the varying prices on Amazon - I've recently found much better prices from other online retailers so I think it's definitely worth some effort to research. I find less and less that they have the best deals around.....

Atlas tools in Toronto, ON Canada sells them for CAD 159.04 with free shipping.
I ordered the 1000 lbs. one and will buy the extra 2 other gauges.
Well no more bathroom scale and contraption....lol

On ebay.ca some sells the 2000 lbs. for 450 US plus shipping and lunch etc. the person is out to lunch.

From Sherline Direct they are $135 USD each. And I will let them price the other 2 gauges.
