Everyone is worried about how much max weight can I pull. I own a 2020 Ford Explore with a 2.3 eco boost. I orders the trailer tow package. When I pull my 3050 lb hybrid I will not pull more weight. I can pull up to 5000 lbs. I would not pull over 4000 lbs. The Explore feels like I am at my limit now.
We had a Jeep Laredo with a 318 co and trailer package we pulled a 67500 lb. Trailer and it was fine.
What has happened to an SUV without and brakes, trailer tow sway don't and auto leveling. They pulled better. Much better ride pulling.
I have to say the Ford 2.3 motor is a very good pulling motor. The transmission is beautiful. The ride is worse than a truck. Will the auto makers ever make an SUV that can pull the weight and be a hooked up pulling vehicle?

I am a die hard Ford fan and have driven nothing but Fords for over 35 years. I am brand loyal to a fault. Your issue is across all makes and models though. There is much more to towing than "rated tow capacity". Many of today's smaller SUV's are nothing more than car chassis's and are designed more for comfort and style than towing.

I agree with the previous post. Most SUVs these days are not meant to be tow vehicles, especially for travel trailers. A 5k max is not much. What is the payload capacity of your Explorer? I wonder how close you are to maxing out.

Tow rating is a joke! What you really need to look at is the payload. Tow rating is about completely empty vehicle (full fuel tank and an average 150 lbs driver), and how much you could tow. No one tows under that condition.
Payload is the real number that should be considered. It is listed on a sticker on the driver's door jam. Payload incorporates the trailer tongue weight, all the people, dogs, and "stuff" inside the vehicle. This is the number people should really look at. All the added stuff, reduces your towing ability.
Lets just make an assumption about your payload sticker says 1000 lbs. Lets add up some theoretical loads; If you subtract 150 lbs from your weight, and the remainder is payload. So lets say that is 50#, your DW weighs 125#, 2 kids, average weight, 100#. Kids bring along a lot of stuff, so lets say 100 lbs, don't forget the dog, so 50 lbs, or the DW's purse 10 pounds. 2 bundles of fire wood, and some fishing gear. Let's guess, another 50 lbs. Your at 550 pounds of payload before the tongue weight is already.
Lets say you have 15% tongue weight on your ball, so that is 3050*.15= 457.5 lbs.
Add it all together and you are overloaded 12.5 lbs (555+457.5=1012.5 lbs).
What most people forget is all the stuff they bring along affects their towing capacity.

Is that your loaded weight, or published dry weight weight? I'm not aware of any hybrid that has a 3050# GVWR. Dry weight is a mythical number. It's the weight of the trailer without any options installed. From the factory it will weigh more than the dry weight due to mandatory option packages (see your yellow weight sticker for "As Shipped" weight). More likely your GVWR is at least 3500, but you don't list your model trailer.

Yes, you can pull big things, but can you stop them, and can your mass overcome their ability to pull you into the next lane or worse when the swaying starts?

The point of the responses here is not the engine pulling power. There are many powerful engines that can pull ridiculous weights. Its about the suspension, brakes, chassis construction, and most of all PAYLOAD capacity of the tow vehicle that we are all referring to...

Engine hp is but one factor, as you say. A hundred years ago when I worked on Tow Boats it wasn't unusual to see a boat w/two Detroit V12-71s (800 HP combined) pushing 1160'of tow x 52' wide loaded and drawing 10'. Do the displacement calculation on that and you're in the many thousands of tons ( approx. 120,000 barrels) It was all in the reduction gears. Just for comparison a Ford 3 valve V10 generates about 360HP and with the torgue shift transmission pushing just one of those barges into a fair tide would be going backward in a hurry.

If I was buying a SUV to tow I would get a Chevrolet Suburban or a Ford Excursion with heavy duty towing package and the largest engine. Then you don't worry about weight, hook up and go, sure they cost more but are worth it. I see these people all the time on the road with a under powered and too small vehicle towing a trailer in the right lane struggling to go 55.

20 Explorer 2.3 has a curb weight of about 4800 lbs. GCWR with proper pkg is 10,100 lbs.
Tow cap - 5,300 lbs. Tongue cap - 530 lbs.
Just throwing these numbers out there. So many factors effect tow ability.
Hook it up ready for camping and hit the scales. Those are the numbers you need to pay attention to.

Don't try to tow in "overdrive" as you'll soon ruin transmission. It's possible rear suspension needs reinforcement. Last thought, ensure hitch adjustment spot on. I took my rig to hitch installer who diagnosed problem immediately after dealer failed twice trying to get it right.

As a side issue........can a rig tow more than it's numbers indicate? (We all know that the mfgrs fudge the numbers a bit, thanks to the liability issues.)
But have an accident in a (numerically) overloaded configuration and see how your insurance company responds.

SUV's are not even close to what they once were. IMO, if you want to tow, a Truck designed for towing (preferably w/ diesel) is the only real solution. I have a friend that was towing a 28' with a Jeep Cherokee, w/ Hemi, Tow Package and well within the towing limits. They went through two transmissions under warranty before dumping it and getting the Ram 2500. He says the Ram is a night and day difference. I tow with a Ram as well so i have to agree 100% with him.

Can tow and should tow.. different animals. Probably depends on your funds available for new trannies and lots of brakes.

One more thought, nothing wrong with having more tow vehicle than you need. It's safer, easier on the vehicle, drives a lot easier. Don't see why people want to max out the tow vehicle to the last pound it can handle.

A visit to a Cat Scale will give you your real weights.
We pulled our 1st TT with an Expedition, 9k tow limit, I figured the TT tipped the scale around 5k so we were good to go. Paranoia kicked in and I hit the scale. Turns out the TT weighed about 4500# with 600# on the ball. I did the math and discovered with the Bride, myself and wiener dog aboard we were under the Rear GAWR a little more than 200#. With another couple in the back seat we were over on the rear axle.
The Cat Scale is your friend.
