Weight Distribution Hitch

WDHs are setup specific to the tow vehicle and trailer, correct? The dealership setup the weight distribution hitch / sway control between my 4Runner and hummingbird. If I get an F150, do I need to adjust the set up?? (Or because the hummingbird is pretty light I can leave off the WDH / swag control altogether?)

You most likely will have to readjust the settings. As for do you need it? On a personal note I don't like to pull any size bumper pull with out weight distribution and sway bar.

I would keep using the WDH if you went with the F150 just for the sway control. If the loaded hitch height difference between the 4Runner and the F150 are different, then you will have to adjust the shank height to ensure the trailer is level when towing.

Your correct.

TV heights and suspensions very so in most cases you will have to readjust a WDH accordingly from one TV to another. If you don't have your WDH installation/adjustment documentations, the WDH manufacture web site should have them.

A WDH will provide enhanced TV handling even in instances when a WDH isn't required, especially in less then ideal towing conditions. Also, adjust your WDH under "loaded" conditions.

To confirm all your TV/TT weights and WDH adjustment, a CAT scale weigh-in can be extremely informative.

Trailerguy,
the GVW of a hummingbird is between 2000# and 4000# (depending on which model you have).

The curb weight of an F150 is between 4000# and 5500#

from the e-trailer website
"Weight distribution is a good idea when the gross trailer weight is 50 percent or more of the vehicle weight or if you are experiencing sag at the rear of your truck."

If you upgrade from a 4-runner to an F150, you will probably be right at the recommended 50% or above (again depending on truck and trailer model).

since you will already own the WDH, have it re-adjusted to the new truck. Then happy towing.

The time I spend re-adjusting my WDH when I went from a 3/4T GMC suburban to a 3/4T Dodge truck was time well spent. I don't even know my 26' / 8500# trailer is back there.

Tim.
