Dropped it by the dealer for an oil change, tire rotation and 10K check-up. Should be good to go to Southern Utah next month for a week to 10 days.

Cruising to work the other day my truck started missing and lost most of its power. Limped 10 miles into the dealership. Truck died as I took my foot off the accelerator to turn into the parking lot. Left it in the middle. Turns out I have the famous 5.4 liter Ford timing chain problem. Tensioner lost oil pressure, chain jumped a few cogs on the timing gear and pretty much destroyed one side of the engine. Dealership quoted $7500.00 to replace the engine with a Ford remanufactured long block. Ouch!!! Did have 150,000 miles on it though.

What did you do to your Tow Vehicle today?

Filled up with diesel for 2.55/gallon at a Shell station nearby and then passed a Sunoco on the way home that had it for 2.47/gallon

Rotated and inspected the tires (found one nail in a tire, but it only entered the tread- didn't reach the belts, so no leak), and torqued lug nuts to specs. Inspected the brakes- all good (enough). Topped off the spare tire air pressure.

I might even wash it today. We'll see if I have the energy later on.

$7500...ouch! Time for a TV upgrade or are you getting it repaired?

Got it back from the shop. A grinding noise started on the way home from work last week and I couldn't locate it. Shop found pinion bearing is shot. Told him to close it back up and took it home and parked in the backyard. $600 estimate. I think my season is over as my camping/dive trip next month just got canceled. Maybe I can do something in October.

I watched my odometer trip the 100,000 mile mark today. Not many miles for an 11 year old truck though. My work truck has 153,000 on it also a 04 Chevy. Both trucks at 4000 miles the oil is full on the stick and caramel colored, not black.

I previously posted I had my ignition switch replaced. It was just worn out after 9 years and at times it was difficult to get it to turn on. Then it hit me last night after I got in bed - What about the key fitting the driver's door lock? I have the fob and it opens the door fine, but nothing was ever said about changing the door lock. So when I got up a few minutes ago I went out and tried the new key in the driver's door and it opened fine.

How does this work? New ignition key and it works on the old lock in the door or did they change that lock too and I just didn't know it? I don't see a door lock on the parts list.

Help from those smarter than me.

It's possible they used your vin number and got an ignition to fit. There are only a few dozen keys per manufacturer. They just rotate them through the vehicles. I know a repo man and He has a key ring from most manufacturers. He just grabs the ring he needs and goes through them until he finds the correct one. Keys and door locks are easy. Its the electronic keys now that is the main theft deterrent

I'll bet your are right. I made the appointment to have the switch replaced a week in advance and they know my truck since it has been there before.

Thanks.

I tried to trade it but the dealer flat out lied to me then denied it. Don't matter what he's got now I'll never buy from him. Told me he could get a certain truck in the teens. Drove it fell in love with it just for his price to be 25k and he wouldn't budge. Never would have driven it had I known the price. Last time I ever do that!

Curiosity finally got the better of me yesterday and I called the dealer. When they removed to old ignition switch they looked at the tumblers that are for the doors and changed the them on the new switch to match.

Now I know.

Just had my first oil change at 5,000 miles on my new truck. Made sure they were using synthetic oil at the dealer. Going in sometime the first of next week to get my tires rotated and balanced. I had just bought a new set of tires on my 2007 right before I sold it. I called Discount tires yesterday and they told me they would switch the warranty to my new truck and continue to rotate and balance the tires for free every 5,000 miles. Also put in a new truck tool box in the back bed. Good to go!
