What hitch rating?

Hi, new to forum. In progress of purchasing a 2019 32BHDS,

looking at the blue ox hitch, just wondering if I should go with the 1000# or 1500# bars

trailer spec:

Dry Weight=8582 lbs.
GVWR (lbs)=9995
Dry hitch weight=950

Will have 2x30lb propane tanks and a battery.
towing with a 2016 Ram 1500 4x4, which has a tow cap. of 10,000lbs
not new to towing, but defiantly to biggest I have ever towed.
thanks in advance for any help

Matt14,

Welcome to JOF

Definitely the 1,500lb spring bars for the 32BHDS.

Depending on your personal loading habits you will be easily looking at a loaded tongue in the 1,200lb to 1,400lb range. Figure your recommended loaded tongue weight in the 13% to 15% range of your gross TT loaded weight......, with closer to 15% as the norm for the longer/heavier TT's like the 32BHDS.

Also, don't forget that the TT tongue weight is supported by your Ram 1500 ....., watch your TV's "available" cargo capacity and rear axle weight limit.

CAT Scale how-to: https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...v-tt-3871.html

I would take your particular configured RAM 1500 to a CAT scale and weigh it with full fuel & passengers. Add any weight to the CAT gross weight not accounted for (cargo, passengers, etc.). The CAT visit will tell you how much "available" cargo capacity (TV GVWR - CAT gross weight) for a TT's loaded tongue weight/WDH weight...., also available rear axle weight (TV rear GAWR - CAT rear axle weight). CAT will take 3 minutes and $9.

Very few TV's exceed their specified "Tow Ratings", it's the TV GVWR and/or rear axle weight limits that get consumed first.

I would walk back into the RV dealership with your CAT results and then work with "loaded" TT weights........, unfortunately many RV dealerships tend to ignore TV & TT "loaded" weight conversations.

Hypothetical loaded 32BHDS: (8,582lbs UVW as-shipped) + (700lbs cargo, no fluids) + (50lbs dealer battery, etc.) = 9,332lbs

Loaded tongue weight at 9,332lbs = 1,213lbs - 1,400lbs (13% - 15%)

You will definitely go over your rear axle weight rating. Lighter trailer or big truck. Yes for that trailer go with 1500# WDH bar.

I’d also be concerned with the hitch rating on that truck....it’s most likely only rated at 1,000 lbs. The hitch weight is going to sail passed that and also more than likely surpass your payload rating. I tow the Starcraft version of the 32BHDS with an F250 Powerstroke....I’m not sure i’d consider a 1500 for this trailer for any type of long distance travel. Just my thoughts.

I have a 2018 32bhds and my tongue weight was 1400 with about a 1/3 of a tank of water. I have the 1400 steadi flex hitch. It is likely your truck will not be able to handle the trailer as well. I posted my weights somewhere on this forum you may want to go look at those numbers, a newer model is going to be slightly heavier and I tend to pack light. I also did not have the wife, kid or dog with me that day.

What does your max payload sticker say? With my Chevy 1500 I would have been over payload with the 32BHDS. I think the 32BHDS is beyond most half ton trucks.

With the tongue weight and driver your almost over the payload of a RAM 1500 4x4 and guaranteed over the rear axle limit.
