Which, 2500 or 3500

wanting to pull a 16,000 with wheel, do I go w/a 2500 or 3500?

LOL, I was gonna say neither would work without wheels but then I think it means fifth wheel.

I would not even think about pulling a 16k fiver without a 1 ton rig and maybe a dually also if it has a pin weight of over 3000.

You see them being pulled by 3/4 units but I would not if I had a choice.

Honestly, if you are planning on pulling any reasonably sized 5vr you should be looking at 350/3500.

particularly with the minimal price difference. IIRC my srw 3500 was literally a few hundred more than the same in 2500. Wasn't looking at duallies at all so unsure what the upcharge is on them but I suspect under 1k

1 ton SRW minimum or bigger, no question.

I was recently the same search mode - I purchased a NP 377RLBH that weighs in at 16,500. Did a lot of research and read all of the great info in the multiple posts on this website. Ended up ordering a Ram 3500 SRW diesel as the TV. No more expensive that the 2500.

Another thing to look at is licensing, tabs, registration or whatever your locality calls it.

My Father-in-law has had several 3/4 ton trucks. This time around he went 1 ton. Really it isn't much more money when buying it. However he got hit with the real difference when it came to registration fees. They are normally based on vehicle value here in MN.

The 3/4 ton trucks were new GMC Duamax which go for mid $60K I think. His annual tabs were about $650.

The 1 ton however was based off vehicle weight or some other calculation. Annual tabs.... $140. At least in MN it was about $500 a year cheaper to register a 1 ton vs a 3/4. Based on that ongoing expense, I wouldn't buy anything but a 1 ton if I was questioning one of the two. Again that is here in MN.

My 2500 carries/hauls my 10K 5th wheel very nicely. No way would I be able to say that if it was 16K.

1 Ton dually.
How many times have you heard, "Gee, wish I'd bought a smaller truck"?
Never.

Just out of curiosity... why wouldn't you be able to say that if it was 16K lbs?

3500, you'll be over the payload of any newer 2500. I just did this upgrade and wishing I got the 3500 DRW from the start

At 16000# I'd expect 4000# on the pin (25%).
Heavy!

You're talking GVWR on the trailer I take it. 1 ton DRW is my vote, but 1 ton SRW is also an option.

Agree the pin weight is going to be north of 2700 most likely once setup depending on layout.

Because the 5th wheel I just traded in (see sig) was 12K and by comparison to what I have now, it didn't tow as well. Add another 4K and...

I'm not going to wade into the weight war, just my opinon.

Take it from someone that used to pull a 5,000# TT with a Tacoma and now uses an F-350.
