Talking Why remove or loosen pressure on the breakpad type swaybar(s) before backing ?

Being the hard of understanding type of person I am I would like to understand why it is a problem when backing. In my mind it is not getting anymore pressure applied when backing and turning than just turning a corner and causing it to extend/retract. Am I just dumber than I look??

From what I understand it is due to the possible extremely tight turns that may be encountered (more so when backing into a campsite), which is "outside" the operating range of the side mounted friction bar, resulting in a damaged or bent bar.....

And not just for backing, but in any extremely tight turn it is sheared to take the friction bar off.

Mainly due to the two attachment points pivoting on a different "radius" than the trailer pivoting at the coupler on the ball. Not 100% sure I worded that correctly, but hopefully it is understandable.... Lol

Hope that helps!!!

I really should get a picture of what the damage can look like. My dealer installed my friction anti-sway ball at the wrong location, and it closed up on my first FORWARD left hand turn out of the driveway. The ball on the tongue is supposed to be mounted 24" back from the main ball center, but was only 21" back, giving it 3" less travel than it should have had. On a sharpish left turn the bar fully closed in the carrier, and ripped the bracket half off the frame.

The dealer has agreed to replace the bracket and mount it at the correct location.

I knew about removing for backing, but never expected this to happen in a normal forward turn.

The install sheet for our Husky recommends having a spotter watch you slowly back into a jackknife position so you will know if you have to regularly remove it when backing up.

When backing any type of trailer, the angle of the trailer to the tow vehicle can easily become much sharper than when moving forward. If you are very good at backing, that "angle of destruction" can easily be avoided. However, even the best backers can be unexpectedly distracted and get in to trouble. The way I look at it, it only takes a minute to jump out and remove the sway control bar, it takes money to repair/replace the damage if I leave it on, and mess up

Thanks to all. I have always removed the bar before backing because that was what I was instructed during checkout at dealer. My mind went on a walk while attaching it last Monday because of high winds on the way home.
Norty1 -I don't want to make a lot of people mad if the website dropped as I uploaded a picture.

I have been RVing since 1976 (1967 if you include camping with my parents so that 49 years) I have never unhooked mine nor did my parents. If I do bend mine some day I am still way ahead. So good luck.

I'm with Trucker Bob - if it's installed properly you shouldn't have to remove it. I've had 3 TT going back to 1968 and never removed it to back up.

But I think the idea of slowly testing it with an observer is a good idea. Probably lots of other things to look for at the same time such as a breakaway cable that's too short or routed poorly.
