Yukon Denali or other...?

Hi all.

My current tow vehicle is a 2012 Yukon Denali, 6.2 liter V8 (not the XL). We are picking up a Jay Flight 287BHS in April. It's 33ft (including the tongue) and weighs about 6200 lbs dry.

I know the Yukon can pull the weight. My concern is the wheel base being so short with a long trailer. Especially when we go into the mountains in Colorado in August.

Has anyone driven a similar combo that can shed some light for me? Do you think this will handle ok? Or would I be better off with a 1/2 ton pickup with a longer wheel base, or even a 3/4 ton?

Thanks!

Need more info on the Denali such as payload capacity [door sticker] and max tow rating. With that trailer you're probably looking at tongue weights in the 850-950lb range loaded.

It looks like my max payload is 1538 lbs (cargo and passengers). From what I've read, my max towing capacity is 8200 lbs. I'll be using an Equalizer hitch.

Stan Man,

Welcome to JOF

I tend to agree your Yukon 6.2L "can pull the weight" of the 287BHS...........

I would take your Yukon (full fuel, passengers, etc.) to a CAT scale and weigh it ($9 and 3 minutes time). Subtract the CAT scale weight from your Yukon's specified GVWR...., that's your actual "available" payload capacity. The available payload capacity is what you have for a 50lb WDH, "loaded" TT tongue weight, and any unaccounted weight for the Yukon at the CAT scale.

Worst case scenario loaded at 287BHS GVWR of 7,500lbs: 975lbs - 1,125lbs loaded tongue weight range (recommended 13% - 15%). IMO your WDH should be rated at 1,200lbs minimum.

We all have different loading habits which effect one's actual TV & TT 'ready to camp' gross weights..., ie; family of 4 cargo, full fresh water tank, etc.. It's very possible that the 287BHS when loaded will fall within your Yukon's specified weight limits, but your personal towing expectations can also influence preferred TV choice.

Once you have your new TV/TT combo under loaded conditions a visit to a CAT scale will tell you everything you need to know...; your typical loaded weights, confirm WDH adjustment under loaded conditions, etc.. Knowing your typical TV/TT loaded weight conditions now eliminates any weight assumptions going forward unless your loading habits change notably.

Load the Denali as you would to go camping (some gear, full fuel, people, pets) and hit the CAT Scale. The difference between the Rear GAWR (from the sticker on the door jamb) and the drive axle (rear) weight will be the max weight that GMC thinks that should be added to the rear axle. TCN points out that you can expect the tongue weight to be 850-950#, add 100# for the hitch and you are looking at adding 950-1050# to the rear axle.
Just a guess but I’d expect you will be over on the rear axle.
The CAT Scale is your friend.

Just saw that Rustic beat me to the trigger.

OP specifically stated his concern was the wheelbase of his Yukon (non XL) and any any stability concerns with towing the 33’ trailer with the shorter wheelbase. OP is looking for anyone who had/has similar setups to comment.

The weight consideration is also relevant.

Stan, I’ve never towed with a similar setup but wouldn’t rush out and replace your 2012 Yukon just yet. If it can handle the weight, and you said you believe it can, I’d tow with it a few times and then decide if you want a different tow vehicle. A long wheelbase will be more stable than a short wheelbase but your wheelbase may not be short enough to be unstable.

That’s too much trailer for your Yukon, trust your gut feeling regarding the wheelbase, choose a 3/4 ton

SouthCo,

The thread set idle for a couple days....., but I'm sure those members that do have a similar combo will also chime in with the thread visibility 'bumped' by today's responses.

I agree that you should weigh your "rig" as it would be towed, per prior posts. You will quickly discover how easily it is to add "weight" to both truck and trailer. My guess is you will quickly approach or exceed the Yukon's GCWR. Will it tow your new trailer, probably. Will it be a pleasurable experience, probably not. There are many on here and other RV forums, that routinely tow at their TV's limits and cite the mfr's tow ratings (and other factors) for their decision to stay with what others would consider a marginal TV. From experience, I'm in the "more" is better camp. A "full sized" truck is just better suited for towing a "full sized" trailer, any distance other than a local destination. (at minimum, a 3/4 ton for a 33' trailer)
