Yukon for towing
Any one else using a 2003ish yukon as tow vehicle? If so how does it do? Just bought a 264BHW. 6500 pounds loaded. Thanks all

I think there was recently a thread about the Yukon. Did you try a search here? Definitely on the heavy side for the 1/2 ton.

Yukon for towing
We had a 2003 Tahoe (same as Yukon with 5.3). We have a 2014 264bh. It will pull it but it's not a good combo. My wife has a 2006 Yukon with the 6.0 and even that isn't a great combo in my opinion because of hills. Congrats on the new trailer and let us know how it works out. Hills will be a workout....

Ya we wont be making long trips. 150 miles one way at most. No real big hills here in mn. I know the yukon would be boarder line but capable of doing it. I got the sway and distribution hitch thingy. A diesel is in the works for the future.

Short trips and no hills probably will do. Take it slow and keep us posted. Have you looked at the stock hitch rating? If you search they are not great. The 2000-2008 (I believe) are not very strong. That is my weakest link so I just ordered a Curt hitch. I can see my stock one flex when I hook up the WDH bars. The curt was less than $240 and has a 2400lbs tongue weight and 17000lbs tow rating.

No i have not. Let me find a flash light and ill see if i can see anything. Dry hitch weight is only 490. Ill be back.

I'll never bumper tow what the curt is capable of but its nice to have too much. The stock hitch does flex. I believe your 264bhw is a little lighter than my 264bh but I think your tongue weight should be north of 700lbs... Google gmt800 hitch failure.

2002 and a 264bh. Tows like a champ. One CG that we go to on a regular bases has an intersection that I have to go from dead stop to a huge incline to get onto an overpass and up to freeway speeds. I barely even know the camper is behind me.

The number of gears in the transmission and the rear end axle ratio are two very important factors in towing performance. If you have a 4spd trans (which you would likely have to lock out 4th gear while towing) your performance will suffer compared to the more modern vehicles which have 6+ gears. This allows the engine to operate in its power band more often and puts the power to the wheels much more efficiently.
If your rear end axle ratio is low (ex. <3.55) this can also cause the vehicle to struggle if it doesn't have large amounts of torque such as a diesel, turbocharged, supercharged, etc.
One last point - your tongue weight will be far higher than 490lbs. That published weight is using the lower acceptable limit (10%) of the completely empty, best case scenario trailer possible, not including propane tanks or battery. You will probably be closer to 700-800lbs on that thing.

Welcome and congrats on the new rig!!!
When hitch shopping, try to get a square tube model for the Yukon. The round tube (at least the factory round tube models) can twist (or wind up) when latching up the wd bars, which can make it difficult to properly adjust the wdh.
Make sure you have the instructions for your wdh (weight distribution hitch) and sway control (if a seperate unit and not integrated). Once you load up the trailer for a trip, you will probably need to re-adjust the set up. The dealer is only setting up the wdh to an empty trailer, not a loaded, ready to camp trailer. Here is a link to wdh set up and how a wdh works.
If this is your first trailer and you can, consider a night or two at the Driveway Campground. Will give you a chance to try everything out, and anything you find you need you could run inside the house to get. Get a pad of paper and a pencil/pen to write anything down that you find you need when camping. Even now we try to make a list as things run low (paper towel, napkins, plates, etc...).

Gameover if you really want to know what your vehicle can safely tow you'll have to figure out your TV's specs. There is a wide range of packages in every vehicle and to be honest the power of your engine is rarely the limiting factor as far as safety is concerned. Just my opinion.

well from experience I towed a 2003 gulfstream mako 32ft tt with my 2005 Yukon. It came in about 9000lbs and towed what I would call ok with weight distribution and sway but would bounce gears a lot even at the smallest incline. Couldn't put full trailer tongue weight on the hitch to lock down before raising it back up to hook weight distributing bars on it because air shocks worked their butt off trying to re level the Yukon. It would pull it and wasn't horrible with sway in the wind but it wasn't the most pleasant experience and I made the decision to upgrade tow vehicles even though I don't camp all over , mainly just within 100 miles. Also fuel went through the floor and normally was around 7 to 8 mpg. Good luck

You will do alright with your Yukon if it has 3.73's (sounds like it does from your RPM/speed you posted in your other thread). My biggest problem with the 06 Tahoe was the 4 speed trans - it will end up in 2nd on really steep pulls and you are turning some pretty good RPMs and not able to get enough speed to shift to 3rd.
I love my Silverado in comparison because it has a 6 speed trans - that allows for 3.42 gears so I get good MPG without the TT, and still pulls great. The longer wheelbase of the Crew Cab is also better than the short Tahoe. I had the same hitch as you, and never saw any problems - might have saved that money to put towards the new TV...
If you go with a diesel, you won't even know it is back there - I couldn't swing that kind of money, but I'm really happy with mine for an everyday driver and TV.

I tow with a 2005 yukon xl denali which has the 6.0, towes great .my last trailer was a 27 ft rockwood, present a 24 ft whitehawk, had no trouble with either.all the power I could want

New hitch is $174. Mine is pretty rusty. Only thing on tv with rust. More of a frame of mind deal for me. I plan on running the yukon for two more years as of now. Then find a decent used diesel tv.
