17 C storage rack on bumper

My 08 17C has a flat bumper not a square one. Id like to get a storage rack that mounts to the back but all of them come with U bolts and brackets for a square bumper. Anyone have ideas?
Thanks!

Not sure what your bumper looks like but check your manual. Many bumpers are not heavy enough to mount a rack to. You may have to mount to your fame. Also be careful on what you load way back there. Not sure but I have been warned about loading too much weight that far back will take weight off the tounge of the trailer and make unstable and sway. So watch your load.good luck

17 C storage rack on bumper

I wouldn't do it on a 17c. After batteries, water&propane you only have 2-300lbs of cargo capacity. A cargo rack that's custom built for the rear (similar to what I'm doing on my 19h) will weigh 75-100 lbs severely cutting in to you already minimal capacity.

That being said, if you still want one, I'd recommend going to a trailer shop and asking them to build one that attaches straight to your frame. My 19h has the larger square bumper, but it's wall thickness is small and wouldn't have the strength to haul anything. I'm having a 3x3 bumper made, larger wall thickness that will have two receiver tubes to accept a custom made tray (can be stowed in the up or down position). I'd post pictures but it's not completed yet.

Youre right sicario, i forgot about cargo capacity... i wanted to put some wood and bbq on the back. The rack and brackets will eat up cargo capacity.

You might go the route of removing the rear bumper and adding a receiver hitch and put an aluminum cargo carrier. If you're only adding some wood and a barbecue, that might not be too bad. Even though my 19h has 1400lbs capacity I'll only likely put 150-200 lbs back there.

I have the same trailer. I put a battery on a shelf on the bumper, also my spare tire rests on it. The bumper is pretty wimpy and I feel like I'm pushing the issue.

I have a Weber baby Q that travels in the bathtub. I try to put anything heavy (beer cooler, firewood, extra propane, wife) in the back of the pickup truck.

If you have any questions about your 17C, feel free to message me as I've done a lot of little things to mine to make my lazy life easier. Right now I'm relocating the grey water valve--don't you just love that setup?

No way would I put ANYTHING on the bumper of my X17C! I won't even stand on it when I'm washing it. The frame is VERY thin....wouldn't weld or bolt anything to it either. If it doesn't fit inside or in the bed of the truck, it stays home.

I see what you did there...

Mine had a flimsy bumper as well. Tried mounting the spare tire to it and it almost seperated the bumper from the mounts. Bought this 4" square tube and welded it to the old mounts. Very strong now.

Nice job. My tire is not actually mounted to it, it sits on the bumper and is bolted through the back of the trailer using a piece of all-thread. I have a piece of wood on the inside acting like a giant "washer" so it doesn't damage the fiberglass/foam trailer wall. The inside of the wall is accessible through an existing access panel.

Bought my 2010 17C back in November and the previous owner had a rack on the back. He attached it to 3 places on the bumper and then underneath to the frame. I actually questioned him about the sturdiness of the setup and he got up on it and hopped around. Said he used it to put coolers on and when the bed was down, the shade would keep his ice longer. I took it off because I didn't like the way it looked.

Why would they sell a trailer without a spare tire or a place to put one to begin with???

If anyone is interested, I've put a bunch of mods on this trailer in the "Mods" section.

My spare tire is mounted at the front under the frame. It's a factory option.

That is a VERY nice set up. I've been thinking of the same but I am far from having the skills to weld up something that nice.

Could you take some pictures of how it is all mounted together and to the frame of the trailer?

Thanks. I designed it but had my local trailer shop weld it up for me. The bumper is basically identical to the stock bumper, but a 3”x3” square tube with a thicker wall thickness. It attaches to the same frame location as the OEM.

My trailer is in storage right now. Next time I head over there I’ll take a few pictures.
