1st time on the interstate with x23b

2013 x23b tv is a 02 Tahoe. Tv has factory tow package.
No water in tanks except what may of been in water heater.
No fire wood .
No WDH or sway controll.
50 - 60 Mph OK
anything over I had had sway & bounce,
White knuckles & hitting the brake control at times, not happy.
I'm running races but 10 - 15 less than everyone else is a danger I feel.
So on the way home I took slower routes.
Never had this with other trailers, but was always able to install a WDH.
I guess I'm going to have to get my thinking cap on & figgure out how Jayco wants a WDH unit mounted on my trailer.
End of rant for now !!!
We do love this camper !

Why can't you put a WDH with sway control built in?
Looks like an Equilizer E2 type would mount just behind the dual propane tanks.
I have a smaller trailer and mounted WDH and sway control?
Hope you figure it out.

Best regards,
Doug

How is your tongue weight? If you are out of balance you can have sway issues.

I am using an equalizer brand WDH. Fits like a glove, and only once have I ever had a sway issue, and that was with extremely high head winds, and my HTT tire pressure was a little low (45psi).

First camper and first time towing one. TV is a 2010 Silverado 1500 tt is Jayco 287BHBE which is 33ft long, Have the Fastway E2 and Primus IQ brake controller. It towed amazingly well and even at highway speeds 60-65 was max. Like I said never towed a TT before but pulled very nicely.
I would think any of the WD and sway systems would hook up to your Jayco.

I use a husky WDH and a sway bar on my 23B. I tow it with an 07 Toyota Tundra. I have not had any issues.

I guess I will wait and see why it is he can't install a WDH and what his pre-hookup weight distribution is. These threads are chick full of threads on towing, sway and the like for him to not know what he should be doing. Don't know why the rant either.

Balanced right you can tow over 65 just as well as under. I had the 17Z up to 75 on more than one occasion briefly while overtaking. With ST tires limited to 65 and the trailer a little overweight (tires under max) I kept my all day cruising speed at 65. GY Marathons too.

Now I tend to tow at 60 since that gives me the same mileage as with the 17Z, even though the RV is almost twice the weight. That too is stable at 65. Never had it faster.

I started out without WDH and had the same experience. Stuck to back roads doing 55 and under and was not comfortable. It didn't help I was new to towing. Once I got proper WDH on there, things were a LOT better. Made it from MI to VA and back without any issues at 65 on the turnpikes, ran through the mountains and all. I know you were having issues finding space in the 2013 model, but surely the dealer's done a few of them. If not, there must be someone else who has. I think you'll be much happier with it.

Sway is usually caused by not enough tongue weight.. Please remember that RV tires (ST) are only rated to 60 mph.

Per standards Special Trailer tires are speed rated to 65 mph, not 60 mph. Sorry to be a broken record, but anyone who runs their trailer tires at too low a pressure may be setting themselves up for tire failure and even handling problems. You don't need to listen to me, you can research what the experts recommend in the links below.

A Canned Response

Most special trailer tires are speed rated to 65 mph. Speed rated is not speed limited. Tire pressure can affect the speed range. Too little tire pressure is a greater sin than too much pressure. Consult your tire manufacturer information.

Personally I would not run my trailer tires at less than the max rated pressure listed on the sidewall. In my experience that mode gives good wear and puts the tire in a range for higher speeds.

Below is some specific information for
Goodyear Marathon Tires

Special Trailer ("ST") Tires

Goodyear Marathon trailer tires are widely used in a variety of towable trailer applications and are designed and branded as "ST" (Special Trailer) tires.

• Industry standards dictate that tires with the ST designation are speed rated at 65 MPH (104 km/h) under normal inflation and load conditions.

Based on these industry standards , if tires with the ST designation are used at speeds between 66 and 75 mph (106 km/h and 121 km/h), it is necessary to increase the cold inflation pressure by 10 psi (69 kPa) above the recommended pressure for the rated maximum load .

o Increasing the inflation pressure by 10 psi (69 kPa) does not provide any additional load carrying capacity.
o Do not exceed the maximum pressure for the wheel.
o If the maximum pressure for the wheel prohibits the increase of air pressure, then the maximum speed must be restricted to 65 mph (104 km/h).
o The cold inflation pressure must not exceed 10 psi (69 kPa) beyond the inflation specified for the maximum load of the tire.

More info is here:
http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires...plications.pdf

If the link doesn't work then just add www. to this

tirerack.com/images/tires/goodyear/Marathon_Special_Trailer_Applications.pdf

What Carlisle says:

Inflation

Underinflation is the number one cause of trailer tire failure. Low
inflation pressure elevates tread temperature, especially as speed
increases.

Review - Practices for Safe Trailer Tire Use

– Maintain air pressure at the maximum PSI recommended on the
tire sidewall.

http://www.carlisletransportationpro..._Practices.pdf
What etrailer says:
Expert Reply:
Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to the maximum psi rating as indicated on the tire without exception. The reason is that if under inflated, because trailer tires are built with a thicker side wall to handle more vertical load, a lower pressure will cause excessive heat build up and cause the tire to fail.

Why would you be hesitant about installing a WDH? I would not even consider towing my 23b without it. I think that you are probably exceeding your receiver weight with out one also. Take a close look at your receiver, there are two ratings one for WDH and one without.

On both my RVs my ST tires were / are rated at 65 mph hence the cruising limit on the previous RV.

We picked up our X23B this past spring. We tow with a 2011 Tundra. The dealer suggested an Equalizer WDH 90-00-1000. We drove from Kentucky to California and back. Absolutely no sway even at Interstate speeds. That being said, I try to do most of my driving at 55 MPH due to gas mileage.

We went through TN, MS, LA, TX, NM, AZ, NV, CA, OR, ID, WY, NB, IL, and KY. We stopped at the following points of interest. Carlsbad Caverns, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Death Valley NP, Yosemite NP, Crater NP, Craters of the Moon NP, Yellowstone NP, Grand Teton NP and Jackson Hole WY. We left on April 23rd and got Home on May 30th. Total miles traveled was approximately 8,000. We made no reservations since we wanted the freedom to stay a bit longer or shorter depending on what we found to do. On nights we needed a campground we would use the I-Pad to search for campgrounds near where we wanted to stop. Never had a problem getting a spot. The camper performed flawlessly. There were about 4 nights when we drove until around 9:00 PM and knew we were going to get an early start the next morning so we stopped at a Wal-Mart or an interstate rest area. Didn't put the tent ends down but use the couch and the dinette area for sleeping. Great trip - we enjoyed it so much we are now planning a similar trip of driving and camping to Alaska.

We have a 2013 X23B with a Husky 1,000/10,000 round bar and husky friction sway control. I have some sway as well, I am still fine tuning weight in the trailer and the WDH. It gets it get a little squirrelly above 60. What is is issue for you getting a WDH?

I'm surprised....it's generally not a good idea to go way over the tongue and GVW ratings for a solid bar WDH like Equal-i-zer brand. Go to E-trailer.com and type in the specs for the X23B (tongue or GVW) and it will guide you to the Equal-i-zer 600/6000 rated hitch....not a 1000/10000 rated. Bigger is not always better.....the stiffer bars will transfer the weight just fine....but with less give that you're likely to feel on the road. Maybe not so much in a Tundra....but moreso the Tahoe and smaller trucks / SUVs.
