How many gallons of anti freeze does it take to winterize?

Bhoke,

Welcome to JOF!

Depends on RV size, floor plan, and plumbing layout requirements. I use a little under 2 gallons by the time I finish filling the P-traps in my Jay Flight 24RBS.

With your 16XRB I would purchase 2 gallons...., save the leftovers for next year.

Don't forget to properly position the HWH by-pass valves 'prior' to winterizing with antifreeze......., and put a cup of antifreeze in the toilet bowl to keep the seal lubricated.

Bob

Thanks!
Model 16xrb.
We finished winterizing but ended up using 4 1/2 gallons. What did we do wrong? Everyone I talked to say 3 gallons max. All bypasses done. HWH and water pump. Just curious as to why it took more than what most say.

Assuming that 2 1/2 gallons isn't on the ground (open low point drain, etc.) and that you ran the antifreeze directly through the pump (not via fresh water tank), I would start with double checking the HWH tank by removing the drain plug insuring no antifreeze is present (faulty bypass valves?).

How much antifreeze did you put in each P-trap?

This was my first time winterizing my newly bought used 2018 16XRB. I used 3 gallons, total. The 1st gallon was pumped through all the faucets, to flush the water out until the antifreeze showed a good rich color. I used the -100 Blue antifreeze.

Don’t forget to flush the shore water inlet port. Your have to press in on the check valve, and get squirted! And outside shower.

Also about 1 cup down each P trap, about 1/2 cup on top of toilet valve.

You should open the low point drains first then open the faucets to drain all the water out of the lines. Then close the low point drains and do the cold side with AF then the hot side if you like. A gallon plus just a little should have done it.

Oh - I drained all the water out through the low point drains with all faucets open first thing before pumping in the antifreeze. I’m sure being my first time I used more antifreeze than I really needed to. Next year, I’ll probably use a lot less.

One last thing I do is make a visual check of the low point drains to make sure the pink is all the way to the end of the low point. If it’s not I open them for just a split second to make sure it pushes the last bit of water out and I also check where the cold line enters the HWH and make sure that line is pink also. It’s not the PEX that I’m worried about it’s the plastic shutoff valve having a little water in it. I also check the low point line under the trailer for the fresh water tank because it has a slight bow in it and the water collects there and I leave that low point open during the winter.
