23B Onwers who have winterized -

Hi all,

Finally getting some free time to get the winterizing done so we can move our baby to the storage facility for winter. In getting things ready last night, I was a little confused.

In the little cabinet under the fridge is the pump. Among the hoses and valves there, there is a clear tube that is open at one end - not attached to anything. I'd noticed it before and in my head I've been thinking all along that this must be what we use to winterize - like flipping the valve and putting the end of the hose into the antifreeze jug. (I wish I'd snapped a picture or looked into it more last night, but then my husband got home from work and the sun went down and we had kids to feed, water and homework before bed.)

In any case, when flipping through the owner's manual last night, the directions on winterizing don't mention that mysterious hose. They say to hook up a drinking water hose to our city outlet and put the other end of the hose into the jug. So I'm just wondering if any of my fellow 23B owners can shed some light on this for me? Admittedly, I didn't delve too much into the area with the water pump yet, just a quick glance.

Thoughts?

I have the same hose and while I don't pump antifreeze I'm certain that's what it's for. On a related note while draining my fresh water lines (I use comressed air) I stumbled over the low point drains under the bathroom lav. I wondered why there was a "Low Point Drains" sticker outside yet no valves. Duh!
Here in South TX, "bitter cold" is about 30F so emptying the water heater, blowing the lines out and splashing a little anti freeze in the drains is about all I do.

Hi,

I have a X23B and I just winterized my trailer. You're right. That hose is for winterizing. After draining the tanks, removing the water filter and replacing with the tube that should have been provided, and draining and by-passing the hot water tank, I used that hose to winterize the pipes. Make sure you close those low point drain valves, if open, and ensure the pump is off. Looking at the pump and that mystery hose, switch the valve that is on the hose from the fresh water tank to "off". There isn't an "off" label, but just turn the valve so it is perpendicular to the flow of the valve. Then turn the valve on the mystery hose to "on". This is done by turning the valve in line with the hose. By doing this, you have prevented the pump from drawing from the fresh water tank and, instead, it will draw from the hose. Now, put that hose into a container of RV antifreeze. Then turn on the pump and go to each hot water tap, starting with the one nearest to the pump and working to the furthest (the outside shower), and turn on until the antifreeze flows out continuously, then turn off. Repeat for each cold water tap, including the outside shower and the toilet. After doing this, you should have filled all the pipes with antifreeze. Turn off the pump. Finish by putting some antifreeze down the drains in case there was still water in them, such as in the traps, and the toilet. I guess, I explained a bit more than the hose, but I didn't want you to assume that the hose was the only thing to consider. In the spring, just reverse the valves. Turn off the one for the mystery hose and turn on the one for the fresh water tank. Now you can flush the system of the anti-freeze, put the water filter back in, and "un" by-pass the water heater.

I hope that helps,

Thank you both! This is exactly what I was looking for. And definitely not too much information - I do the research but my husband still does most of the dirty work. He will appreciate the walkthrough!

Here is a pic of a waterpump. The clear hose is inserted in the jug. The valve coming from the waterpump should be turned off and the one to the jug turned on when winterizing. This picture shows the valves in the normal position.

Wow, I wish our pump was as open and accessible as that! Still, it's pretty doable. Our pop up was the worst - had to take apart half the camper just to rinse out the filter on the water pump. It was an hour long project. Thank you for the picture Crabman - this is going to be a snap!

Yes it is under the kitchen sink. It was directly mounted to the wall that separates the kitchen from the bedroom in the previous picture, and was very loud. Here is what it looks like now since my silencing and accumulator tank mod:

Much quieter!

KillbearCamper - great information! We did not do our own winternizing, but will next year. I just find it all a bit overwhelming! I guess once you do it the first time than its a breeze

You're welcome. I was able to do it while waiting in the dumping station line at Killbear Prov Park on Thanksgiving!

It wasn't like last year, but I still got out and did some kayaking on Georgian Bay. We also bought a lot more wood. Even though it was cooler, the family had a great time! The heated bed mats and furnace came in handy.

We bought a 23b this year and it took 25 minutes to winterized myself and this is our first camper. The setup is simple.

I just picked up our X23B and I am planning to winterize this weekend. How much antifreeze does it take to fill all lines, traps, etc.?

I got a 9.46L jug from Home Depot for less than $10. It was more than enough. I just stored the rest in the trailer.

I blow out the lines first and used less than 1 gallon.

Hey Killbear Camper - Can you tell me how to remove the water filter under the fridge? I have no tube that was provided. I've removed the end that the input hose connects to, but don't know how to remove the filter from the pump. If I don't have the needed bypass tube, what happens if I winterize without taking the filter out? Thanks for any help.

This may be bad form, since I've posted this on another thread, but I'd like to finish my winterizing on my 23b, but I need some help. I'm in the middle of winterizing for the first time, and I've read I need to remove the water filter. I think I know where it is and what it looks like - near the pump and looks like a clear cylinder with mesh inside - but I don't know for sure. How do I remove this? Do I just remove the clear part, or the whole part that is inline with the tube? Also, if I take this out before I pump in the antifreeze, won't it just leak out there? I've read I need to put a tube in there, but I don't see a tube to replace that. Can you help this newbie?

Here's a picture of what I think is the water filter - I removed it from the line, but don't know how to remove it from the pump:

I just unscrewed the clear portion, rinsed out the screen and put it all back together for next year.
