Air Conditioner on 15Amp

Total rookie so be kind...

I have a 2018 16XRB (just got it three weeks ago) after upgrading from a 1992 Coleman popup. I hooked the camper to my houses' electric via the shore cable and a 30 amp to 15 amp adapter. My daughter wanted to sleep in the camper the first weekend and while doing so she turned on the air conditioner. I heard from someone that it can damage or destroy the air conditioner by connecting to a 15 amp. Is this true? The manual is a bit vague because it says it wont run on a 15 amp but it sure did. Does the air conditioner only use the fan when not on a sufficient 30 amp power source. Thanks in advance.

Nope, won't hurt the a/c, worse case scenario the breaker trips for the outlet.

[worse case scenario the breaker trips]

That's what I was hoping for. Cause I just tried the same thing. Fan would work, but not AC. Where my trailer is stored, were getting a 30 amp box installed. Thanks mom.

A 13.5000 BTU runs around 12 amps, but the startup is around 25 Amp (the kicker), so unless you have 20 amp circuit on #12 wire it will work.
15 amp circuits have #14 wire; never run the a/c on that [Fire hazard]

Ran a 15,000 on & off since 1978 on a 15 amp circuit and "NEVER" had any safety issues. The breaker will trip first.

It won't cause an issue, it pulls the higher amperage for only a moment and the breaker should not pop. By code you can actually run a 20 amp breaker on a 14 ga line when putting in new service panel, we did it all the time. In fact, when we installed a new service and replaced the meter housing we would jump the meter with 12 ga solid wire and it ran the whole house with no issues...but then it was out in the open air no insulation not in conduit.

Definitely not an issue, as mentioned. Just make sure if you use an extension cord it is of ample size. I was stuck once and only had a 12g or 14g cord, it gets hot quick with all the resistance due to length.

I ran mine on 15 amp this morning while cleaning up from the last outing. To give some specifics, I have a 15k btu ac. I have my camper plugged into the house with the camper cord, a 30ft 30a extension cord then a 15 to 30 amp adapter. My Progressive EMS showed 122v before I turned the AC on. I started with low cool for a 10 seconds then turned to high cool. The EMS display showed 119v and 11 amps. I have seen it as high as 14 amp but I had the lights on so the inverter may have been running and charging the battery. Case in point, I only saw a 3v drop and was below the amp rating of my receptacle.

If you have to use an extension cord, I would be sure to use a 30 amp one. They are pretty stout! Got my camco one on an Amazon deal for like $17!

No hair dryer necessary during cleaning but she did ask if she could run the vacuum at the same time. Sure.. Turn the AC to high fan lol.

To the OP, your 16xrb probably has a 8500 or 12000btu ac. No problems. Running it on 15a. The AC will draw about 9amp with the compressor on. Just make sure you're using a high quality extension cord of appropriate length and have her come inside to pop the popcorn.

I know this thread is old but wanted to chime in about safety.. If you're not using your RV 30 amp cord right to your wall and instead are going over a standard extension cord, this is for you.

The breaker in your house will only trip if the wiring IN YOUR HOME (in the walls) gets overloaded. It doesn't help you if your EXTENSION CORD gets overloaded - unless that extension is rated the same or better than the wiring in your home.

Scenario: your home has 15 amp wiring and 15 amp breakers, but your extension cord is only rated for 10 amps. If you pull 15 amps over that extension cord, then it will become overloaded and heat up, but wiring in your walls and your breaker will not. Your breaker will not trip, leaving nothing to stop the extension from catching on fire.

Fortunately an A/C unit only draws high amperage when starting up. It's not so bad once it's running. Even so, I would urge anyone in a scenario like the one I mentioned upgrade to a better extension cord to be safe.

Here's a more in-depth explanation:

I have a 2018 16XRB. It has a 13,500 BTU roof mount AC. I installed a soft start, and can now use a Champion 2500 watt duel fuel inverter on propane to run it. I use a 12 gauge extension cord

We run my ac at home for years on a 15 amp breaker. It is wired derict to the darker so nothing else is on it. My trailer is a 2008.

I know it will vary greatly based on air temp and what setting the AC is on, but how long does a 20lbs tank run that genset?
