Ant infestation?

Yesterday I went to check on our X17Z which has been in storage and is covered. it will need to stay that way for another six weeks.

I discovered some ants on the floor, dead ants in the bathroom, and a fair number of dead and live ants on the screen of the fan in the bathroom; some of the live ants were hauling corpses away to who knows where.
I realized then that the problem might be that the storage lot is on dirt, not pavement and that the straps of the cover were on the ground.
Has anyone experience something similar?
Any suggestions how to deal with these ants?

Have encountered ants within the RV on a few occasions. Each time root cause was food left open such as a box of cereal with the inner bag just stuffed down in, or traces of crumbs left behind. It doesnt take much for them to seek out a food source. Diligent cleanliness is needed to steer them elsewhere. Sighting in the bathroom may be due to something smelling nice there.

The cover straps on the ground shouldnt make a different; ants can crawl up the wheels, front jack- anything touching the ground. It may be that the storage area has a large colony of ants, look around.

As mentioned; fully clean, no trace of food, body lotions/chemicals, etc.

dxrobertson: no there was no food left anywhere. The only stuff I am wondering about is the antifreeze in the pipes, the drains, and the toilet.
Maybe they feasted on that - at their peril? It might explain the dead ones...

This works like a charm. They will feed on it for a day, then you will never see me again. They take it back to the colony…

Black ants or small sugar ants? Black ants go after moist/ wet wood.

Black ants. Shouldn't have any wet wood, though.

Good point. But I would think you would see atleast a few corpses in the toilet? Would be interesting to inspect the traps to see.

Doesn't take much they can do as much damage as temites. You could still have a nest inside since they come out in the spring.

Right from the web:

Carpenter ants require a water source to survive.

Ant dust in the path at some point. They carry it back to the nest and it kills the queen.

With Palo Verde and Mesquite trees that have sweet sap we have a fair number of them here. The dust, in the path that you find generally stops the problem. In our case it never really ends because they repopulate due to the food source.

I've had good success with Ortho Home Defense. I spray everything that touches the ground and the axel and springs. When closing it up for storage I'll also spray the perimeter inside including the bottom of cabinets. I do this with the Hummingbird and a 5th wheel that I keep in Florida.

I use this at home in the yard and all around the under side of the camper. The little bottle will last a while. I mix it and use it in a gallon sprayer.

We kept seeing large black ants in one bedroom. Just a single one once in a while.
Then I noticed the frame of a window was soft. Yep, weather strip over top was cracked, water got into frame, and they took up residence.
Go over your roof, window frame, etc. inch by inch. They have found some wet wood and taken up residence somewhere in your RV and are making nests in your frame.
I had to spend hundreds to replace the window. Catch yours before they cause to much more damage to your frame.
They are in there somewhere!

We were camping with friends last year in the heat of summer. She would see an ant here and there and didn't think anything about it. She had put some "sweet" treats in her microwave and the next morning, what a mess. Turns out there was a nest in the outside access panel to get to the back of the fridge.

Do it quick.
The type of ant matters, both for the destruction and the 'cure'. Sometimes the smell is overwhelming.
If it is Argentine ants you will need a particular poison- available at the box stores.

The most peculiar thing is that when I visited a few days later to place traps, I found one live ant and two heaps of corpses - one on top of the screen of the bathroom fan and one on the floor under a curled up part of the rug.
It looked like the whole colony had somehow been massacred...

Some ant species are canaballistic.

Getting rid of waste. If you see one carrying a dead one it is probably coming from the nest to the disposal site. They like a clean nest.

Do a 'Google Search'....kinda interesting.
