Applying eternabond over caulk

I am going to put eternabond on my roof along 2 seams. There is already caulk on there, I can tell some of it is like the Dicor self leveling. Can I put the eternabond tape over the caulk as long as the seam is flat on the roof? I have the 4 inch wide roll. I am sure 2 strips will cover the seam easily. Has anyone else done this or am I supposed to pull all the caulk?

I don't think it is necessary to remove the old caulk. The area where the Eternabond is going to be applied needs to be very clean. I clean the roofing membrane itself with alcohol; it will remove the surface dirt and chalking. After an initial cleaning with the alcohol, do it again - then use a rag or paper towel and rub the membrane surface again to remove residual chalking. For the caulking itself, I use a rag dampened with naphtha - which will damage the membrane and the glue that holds it down, so don't allow the naphtha to get onto the membrane; mineral spirits would work well, too, but it does not evaporate as quickly as naphtha. When applying the Eternabond, don't expect it to be perfect when going over an uneven surface - it does not like to stretch over irregularities. Use a roller to roll firmly over the Eternabond to get it to stick well. Expect the Eternabond to stick the first time it touches anything - it is very hard to re-position it if the initial "stick" is in the wrong place.

I saw on another forum where a guy had put eternabond tape over every seam on the roof of his brand new trailer just for piece of mind. As I recall he put it on right over the factory caulk.

Just curious...on the Eternabond website, it says that the seam tape will not adhere to silicone. So, if the existing caulk is silicone-based, shouldn't it be removed prior to taping?

Yes, just as long as the existing caulking isn't pulling up from the roof seam surface...., then prep/clean the existing caulk along with the roof surface area. If your EternaBonding the roof/cap seams, then I would recommend the 4" wide thus insuring adequate roof surface contact coverage on each side of the caulking.

I applied my Enternabond while camping a couple of years ago, here's my project:

Very important with Eternabond tape is DO NOT STRETCH IT. I did the first time, and I know I did the first time I applied it. It would not stick to the roof. It looked good for a day or two then is started pealing up. I removed it, re applied it ensuring it was not stretched and it has held very well ever since.

Most things do not stick to silicone. If you are fully encapsulating the old caulk and it happened to be silicone base, it would not be a big deal as the outer edged, is secured to a non silicone based roof membrane.

I see, I see! Thanks for the info. Haven't had to face this yet, but I will eventually!

If there is silicone caulk on your roof somebody apparently used the wrong stuff.

Why not remove the caulk first before applying the Eternabond tape. I know that's probably a lot of work, but at least then you'd have a nice flat surface.
