Battery Box

Quick question guys. I purchased a used 2014 Jay feather last summer. This past winter when I winterized it I removed the battery and kept it in the garage. I swore I removed two bolts that were holding the box in place but I can't find them if I did. Now I'm confused on what was holding the box in place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BubbaTew,

Welcome to JOF

When new the RV dealership provides the battery box & battery on TT's, HTT's, etc..., and a fabric cinch-strap that goes around the battery box/lid and underneath the battery support frame rails, or in the case of your 2014 Jay Feather the fabric cinch strap may have went underneath the battery tray.

Standard fabric strap looks like the following (but will also wrap underneath the battery box rails or tray:

It's possible the prior owner may have added a metal wrap-around strap with a bolt/nut (or lock).

Welcome to the forum.

Any chance there were bolts going through the bottom of the battery box?

The last camper we bought new had the battery installed at the dealer. It was not secured with screws. As previously stated it was secured to the camper only by the cinch-strap. I was not comfortable with that arrangement so I added screws.

Yes, use some bolts; be sure they are stainless steel. Not only are the cinch straps a pain in the butt, they will fail after a few years out in the sun. There are battery boxes that have covers that simply snap on and off--Wally Mart maybe?

I retired my 2 year old cinch strap and replaced it with a light duty load strap. Holds fine, easy to use. The load strap would keep the box in place under any condition I could think of.

I doubt a couple of bolts through the bottom of the plastic box would hold it in place or the battery in even a minor fender bender, a load strap will.

Welcome to the forum!!!!!

My battery boxes were not bolted down, just had straps. I drilled 2 holes in each box and in the TT's battery supports. I used 2 different size washers on larger washer and one smaller washer on top of that one. I used a self tapper metal screws. Now 7 years and holding great. I also bolted a chain to the frame and inter-weaved it through the battery boxes for security.

Our first TT had the battery box screwed to the supporting angle iron under it and I had zero issue with it in 6 years. I liked the simplicity of the snap on lid. Our new TT has a Camco battery box with a strap. The box is screwed down but I can’t stand the strap or the way the lid fits on. I’m going back to a snap on lid from another manufacturer.

My battery bank is in one of those TORKLIFT 54-inch boxes with slide-on top. I will be using CARRIAGE BOLTS on the bottom that has smooth non-slotted rounded heads and the lock washer and the nuts for the carriage bolt will be inside the box floor... The slide-off top has a keyed lever slot to hold it in place... The rounded head carriage-bolt on the bottom should make it a lot harder to cut off to get the large battery bank off my trailer tongue area...

Of course anything is not theft proof but this should slow them down somewhat...

In all my years of camping off-grid I have not had any theft issues so don't know if any of this is good or bad hehe... Maybe it just makes one feel better about it...

My battery box is replacing my tongue mounted battery cases using the same welded on angle guides shown here... Fits perfect...

My new battery box will have two of the small 10Watt solar panels on it (one on each end) to trickle charge both GC2 6vDC Golf Cart Batteries in series battery groups when sitting in high sun during the day...

The 10 watt panels look like a great idea! Can a small panel like that be wired directly to the battery or do you need a charge controller to prevent overcharging?
