Bed latches on our hybrids

Hey gang....

Shortly after we got our 2013 X23B, I managed to break a key in one of the locks. Fortunately, it was in the "unlocked" position when the key broke. I left it alone because the other latch locked alright.

Well, today nothing would do but I tried to get the broken key out of the lock. I managed to get a small slotted screwdriver and the lock turned. Problem is, it went in to the"locked" position. And to top things off, I managed to completly destroy the lock!!! Needless to say the wife isn't too happy with me, saying I should have left well alone. But I tried explaining to her that it was a guy thing, I don't think she bought it.

Now, what do I need to do to get it repaired? Is just the lock replaceable? Or do I need to replace the whole latch? Also, are the keys and locks universal or will I end up with 2 different sets of keys? Anyone have this happen to them??

Any input is appreciated, Thanks!

I know the keys are not universal. My dealer said they didn't need my keys, but then they could not get the bunkend open. If you have the key number you can see if the dealer can order a lock that will use the same key. I am not sure if the locks are replaceable. Good luck.

You can buy just the lock. There is a little sticker?? On the latch mechanism that says something like www.fastecindustrial.com. You can buy whatever piece you need, and you can tell them what key number you want. I have not ordered a lock yet, but call them up, I bet they will give you directions to replace the cylinder.

Hey Jagiven.... The key I have is a Global Link and I read where the Fastec keys are not interchangeable with Global link.

But after doing some searching, I found a link to the Global Link key with my key code. It looks like they also have a replacement key cylinder as well.

Take a look at this link and see if you think this is what I need.

http://www.rvlocksandmore.com/Global...d-Keys/KC-DMNM

Also, would a locksmith be able to replace it, or should I have an RV dealer do the work?

I don't know if you will be able to replace it if you cannot get your key out. My Thule bike rack uses a similar lock cylinder and similar key. I know to install or remove the cylinders for my Thule bike rack you need to insert a master key to into the locking cylinder. This set up is probably the same.

Edit: Actually, that website mentions that you need a key to replace the locking cylinder. However, they only ship the master key to authorized dealers (Yellow and Green Keys on the link you provided).

Hummm. Jayco must have changed vendors sometime during the 2012 production season.

If that is the manufacture of your lock it should work for you. I would take a picture of the lock and print out the lock cylinder information and first stop by a locksmith with the information and talk with them. Then I would order it. Personally I would pull the HTT over to a locksmiths shop once you have the part and have them do it for you. The RV dealer will charge a fortune, and having the locksmith come out will too.

I would not be surprised if the locksmith did not drill out the cylinder.

Thanks fellas......

I contacted a locksmith this morning and on the way to look at it.I also contacted a RV service shop that does work on Jayco's, but you never know how long they will need to keep it. I'm hoping a locksmith can do the job faster??

I'll keep you updated.

UPDATE....

Well I'm pleased to say that the locksmith was able to get the broken key out of my lock. Plus was also able to get the latch unlocked as well!! He also said the part I linked to above would also work and he would replace it for me when it comes in. All this for $35 bucks!

I also sent Jayco a service question about my problem and they sent me a reply this afternoon. Here is what it said:

"Gerard,
Thank you for the email. You will need to replace just the lock assembly with Jayco part # 0224668. You can order this lock assembly through your local Jayco dealer. The keys are universal and the new lock assembly will also come with a set. No need to replace the latch. Have a good day.

Troy Niswonger
Customer Service Specialist "

So it basically looks like he is saying the same thing that I am going to do.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has broke a key off in their locks and this is good information to know for future referrence.

Amazing what calling the expert (in this case, a locksmith) can do.
