Black Water and Winterizing

Quick question... We are behind on winterizing the camper because we expected to use it earlier this month but ended up canceling the trip. I want to winterize it this weekend and know for the most part how to do a lot of it. My questions is regarding the black water tank. We had an odor issue after the last camp trip so I added extra solution and 2-3 gallons of water to the toilet. Does this have to be drained for the winter? If so what options do I have to drain blackwater without using a campground?

For some reason I was thinking the blue/green solution was kind of an anti-freeze but only because of the color I don't think that these have anti-freeze agents as that is not what they were designed for.

The safe answer is yes, completely drain both tanks. Depending on your TT design, I would use a couple of 1 gallon ice cream containers and drain the tanks in to it, and then flush the fluid down the toilet (in the house). Then close the valves and winterize and normal. I like to put a little RV antifreeze down in each tank just to ensure any remaining water cannot freeze and damage anything.

The blue green solution you add to the tanks is more for deodorizing than anything else.

I would drain the blackwater tank but I don't think it will hurt if you don't

Just curious - why ice cream containers?

Well you could use any kind of bucket, but 1 gallon ice cream fit under the sewer connections, and make it easy to carry the waste water to a toilet to dump. 5 gallon buckets are nice but to tall, to fit under the sewer connection. A blue tote would work, but I would have no desire to carry that into my house to dump. So a lower profile 1 gallon ice cream bucket would work, just might take a few trips.

If it was grey water and not the black water, I would have no issues dumping it in the yard, if it was not for having a dog.
