Bumper reinforcement + receiver + platform

Hello,
New to the forum.
Wondering if my future setup is ok:
1) bumper safetystruts
2) bumper hitch receiver (not welded, bolted around bumper)
3) spare tire to one side, cargo carrier mounted to hitch receiver on other

is the torque too much from a long-tongued cargo carrier?

Thanks for your insight!
-Jonathan

The safety struts will help a bit, but most welding shops charges are pretty reasonable. I would pony up a bit more to have something solidly welded in place with as many frame contact points as possible.

The amount of torque on the bumper is very dependent on the load that you put on the carrier. A long tongue carrier will amplify the issue. If you plan to put a heavy generator back there, it could be an issue. If you only want to carry an empty poop tote, it would probably be fine.

Also you have a smaller single axle trailer, be careful putting too much weight back there or the tail could start to wag the dog...

I like the freedom of u-bolts because they are moveable and if I get just a welded receiver it will be dead center. Maybe just welding the bumper on better with some reinforcements?

The bumper snakes are awesome! The previous owner put them in!

Welcome to the Forum.

There’s no way I would use the stock bumper to carry 300# or so! . Having 300# sitting static on the bumper and not moving is one thing but going down the interstate or highway at 60 mph and bouncing up and down a completely different animal!

I removed the ends of the bumper leaving it attached to the frame rails, then re-enforced the frame rails with 1/4” angle iron going forward 4’, This was to help the frame support the new rack and the dynamic forces that would be in play. I used 1/4” stock on EVERYTHING, which is significantly stronger than the 11ga steel on the rear bumper. I also added a receiver designed to flat tow my Jeep with behind the fifth wheel.

I barely trust the bumper for the spare tire and sewer hose, anything more than that, no matter how you reinforce it is probably going to end in disaster!

Here’s a few more pics of the rack, receiver mounts and final layout. I use 1 ratchet strap under the rack to prevent any bouncing, that rack moves as though it’s an extension of the frame.

I had the same thought, so I contacted Jayco, who told me that the bumper is only able to support 100 pounds.. and your spare wheel probably uses up 20 or more of those pounds.

I'd say you've got some serious engineering to do... and you may want to consider what this will do to the weight distribution/balance, if you hang any serious weight on the back.

(Just a thought.. has anyone ever done mods like this and actually informed their insurance carrier?)
