CO2 censor going off

I was out this weekend in cooler weather (Iowa) camping and had the CO2 detector go off repeatedly during the evenings. It did not go off during the day, but at night after midnight both nights it would go off.

I reset it each time and made sure that the family was OK as everyone was up from the alarm. Has anyone had this happen in the past?

Mine will sometimes just start doing a beep every few seconds. It has never gone into a very loud steady alarm mode.

I assume you was using your furnace when your alarm went off???

I think the occasional beep is an low voltage 'battery' alarm...

I too hate to hear any noise coming from the detector as you never really know if it for real or not...

Was this the first time you used your furnace?

Was the furnace running at all? When new there's some kind of coating that has to burn off that will trigger the smoke alarm. If your furnace is older perhaps there is a leak in the heat exchanger and you are getting CO inside.
Are you sure it was the CO alarm and not the propane alarm or even the smoke detector?

I've discovered over the last few weeks that methane gas will set off the alarm, too. Mine is located right outside the bathroom door which I never close (since it's just me and the dog). It's gone off three times while using the toilet . . . I guess you guys/gals can take it from there.

I now open the vent & turn on the fan, and it hasn't gone off in a week.

I went in to the trailer today, and my smoke alarm started going off (not low battery chirp) and wouldn't stop. I finally had to take it off the ceiling into the house and took the battery out, put it back in and it still went off a couple of times. It's settled down now but, geez what's with these things?

Yes, had the thing sounding off with a steady tone. Greyhawk is a year old. Furnace has been used a lot. Could not stop it, so I unscrewed it and cut the wire. Dealer will install a new CO detector.

I have used my furnace alot as well. What is strange is we have used it in colder weather and it did not go off. I guess I will take it to the dealer and have everything checked out. I don't want to take a chance with it.

CO is a dangerous invisible odorless gas that will kill you if you are unaware of its presence. If your CO alarm is going off then take necessary precautions and have the area checked for the presence of CO. It may sound absurd, but call your FD and have them come and check with a real 4 gas meter for the presence of CO. At a minimum, ventilate the area (open windows / turn on fans) until the alarm resets.

I installed a second CO alarm in our x18d as a precaution. If only one goes off change the battery and reset. If both go off, ventilate and evacuate.

FYI, I have some experience with CO alarms and the medical emergencies they can cause. Don't disable an alarm without checking to make sure something is not legitimately wrong. Disabling the alarm and going back to sleep could be a fatal mistake!

Everthing GVN said is right on target. Don't take chances with a CO detector. Having said that, we've found out that hair spray, spray cologne, and other similar stuff can set off the CO detector. Found out that Scotch Guard will also do it, as it went off when I was spraying the carpet. It did go off after a few minutes. CO will definitely put your lights out without you even knowing it.

When we had our Popup, the CO2 sensor was positioned in the Dinette area near the floor. It went off one night a scared the you know what out of us. Turns out, placing the Dog bed in that convenient spot also meant our Dog Abby could exhale directly on it.

Could it be a dirty or dusty sensor? I can't remember if CO detectors can be cleaned with compressed air or if that is just smoke alarms.

I think I will add a second monitor to our trailer so if one falses I can go back to sleep and have a good chance of waking up again!

They go off when they go bad. I've had a couple replaced in two rigs.

They sometimes start going off for no reason at all times. Indicating it is time to replace. For some reason, they don't last like they used to.
I have had to replace one on each of my last 2 rigs that were only a few years old.
The sticker on the back says to replace every 5 years.

Every one I have had go bad started going off at 3:00am. I think their programmers have a warped since of humor.

Did you do any re-winterizing with antifreeze during your trip?
I've had my CO/Propane detector go off every year when I add antifreeze to the p-traps. I open the doors and windows and turn on the exhaust fan and after about 5 minutes, the alarm goes off and doesn't come back on. I think it is the initial smell of the antifreeze that does it.

I'd suggest you purchase a separate Carbon Monoxide detector and place it in the TT while camping. If the factory installed alarms but the hand-held does not, you know you have a faulty detector. Better safe than sorry.
