Disconnect or not???

OK, getting ready to leave the campground after a three day camping trip. I realized my battery is extremely hot and kind of smoking. We were plugged into 30 amp circuit for the three days. Should you disconnect your battery when you get to the campground? What is this cost from? I have a X 23B. Thanks!

You shouldn't have to disconnect the battery when plugged in to shore power. I would check and see if there is any water in your battery. If it is full maybe it's getting too much charge

I would also agree to have the battery checked. Maybe it needs service or has an issue. I would also check with a meter to see what voltage is at the battery when hooked to a shore line. This will tell you if you have proper charging voltage. It comes down to a bad battery or overcharging condition. Sometimes one id the cause, and the other is the affect. That is why you check both.

This one is hindsight, but it is worth investing in some kind of circuit tester or surge protector. Apparently a huge number of campground electric pedestals are not wired properly - and if it causes a “hot skin” condition, that could kill you. Google what Mike Sobol says about it and you’ll read some important (and somewhat scary) information.

If the battery was working well before you went, it is entirely possible that the pedestal messed up your battery. One thing for sure - I would get it checked out before I used it again!

Same thing happened to me. My son said I need a new battery. He worked at Napa.

Your converter cooked your batteries. CHeck the output voltage of the converter.

- How old is the battery?
- Was the battery ever dead?
- Did you discharge lower than 10.5 volts?
- Did you always keep the battery water level filled?
- When filling battery, any particular cell have lower water level than the others?
- Did you ever see the top's of any of the battery cells?
- Are your battery connections tight and clean?
- is your frame ground cable clamp tight and clean?

Above are all things that will affect your battery. All important battery questions.

As mentioned get an voltage monitor. Something like the one below.
