Hot water bypass 16XRB

After the dreaded rotten egg smelling hot water heater issue that was fixed thanks to the help of the wonderful people on this forum, I am now wondering is it possible to bypass the hot water heater on a 16XRB? We do alot of dry camping in our trailer and have no real use for hot water most of the time. I find draining the hot water heater quite a pain since the drain screw is difficult to get off and i would like it if I had the choice to bypass the water heater when ever I am dry camping. Has any on done this?

What year? If it has the valves for winterizing those are what you would turn. If not you can buy a bypass kit.

2016 is the year. I have a tech do the winterize so I’m unsure of the valve but would love to find out if it exists on this model. I would not want it to be permanent but it would be a nice option.

Access the back of the heater, and you should find the bypass valves. If you have three valves, it'll look like these.

Thanks guys. I will have a look in the trailer to figure this out. Is it just the top valve I would turn to bypass?

No, you have to close the bottom valve ( cold going in ) and the hot valve top ( hot water going out).

You'll need to turn all three. To bypass it, make the valves look like in Tunce's picture. It was taken in bypass mode. When the valve handle's inline with the pipe, it's open, 90* from it, and it's closed. Let us know if you find it ok.

Also, make sure you pull the fuse for the hot water tank, if somebody turns it on it will burn out the element.

thanks guys this worked like a charm!

regarding pulling the fuse, the hot water heater needs to be lit to turn on no? As long as it is turned to the off position does the fuse still need to be pulled?

There is no fuse to pull. Just turn off the circuit breaker.

I wasn’t sure if it was the fuse or circuit breaker.

You want it so nobody can turn it on by accident. It’s super easy to hit the wrong switch. And 10 minutes without water will burn the element out.

All 120 circuits are circuit breakers. All 12 lighting and control circuits are fuses.

I know the difference thanks. I work on 120V systems that use 12V pumps and heaters as they are more efficient, so I assumed they would do the same in RV's

One thing i forgot to ask about this hot water tank bypass, does this need to be adjusted back to "normal" setting for when you are winterizing the plumbing? Or do is it fine to leave it with the hot water tank bypassed?

leave it bypassed until you remove the antifreeze. If you blow and don't use antifreeze it does not matter.

Ok thanks for the reply. Is it also fine to leave it bypassed when de-winterizing (removing antifreeze)? Its easier for me to just leave our hot water bypassed as we don't use hot water usually. I just want to make sure nothing gets messed up leaving the hot water tank bypassed through the winter.
