Hot water problems

Just got finished de-wintering checkin things over. We have the top and bottom valve open and the bypass closed but no water is going in or out of the tank. If we open the bypass valve then water goes into the tank. But no hot water comes out. Tank is heating and the water is hot. Any suggestions?

Here is an older thread, it is 3 pages. Look at post #18, the poster had a similar problem as you describe.

Hope this helps....

Thanks. That's not the problem, all valves are in correct position. No hot water comes out of the tank. We think maybe there is a problem with the valve for the hot water and since that's not working no water will go into the tank either unless the bypass is open. Now we just need to figure out how to fix it.

Just thinking out loud: valve is open when handle is parallel with pipe ( hope that's not insulting )

Also, outside on the tank is the pressure release valve. Pull up on the spring loaded handle to ensure you don't have air pressure in the tank

If you open the bottom drain valve on the tank, do you get water?

I know you're not meaning it that way. But we know which way is opened and which way is closed. This is not our first time dewinterizing. Plus, the dealer had us draw a picture on the access panel.

With all valves in correct position, no water comes out of the faucet when you turn just the hot faucet on. We checked the hot water tank, it was empty. We could get it to fill, but only by opening the bypass valve. Even after closing the valve and knowing the tank was full and water was hot, by releasing the pressure valve, when we turned the hot water faucet on no water would come through. We tried all the hot water faucets, nothing.

Cut the pex clamp at the inlet and outlet valves to the hot water tank. Remove the tubing from the valve and use a flashlight and look into the fluid path of the valve then open and close it to visually CONFIRM that the valve opens and closes properly. "The handle is parallel to the pipeline" isn't good enough-open the line and confirm it. I've seen ball valves where the stem breaks off at the ball and everyone thinks it's working fine.

Thank you. We were thinking that it's a problem with the valves. It seems like they are working because they turn but like you said, it doesn't mean that they are. Other online searches come up with faulty check valve. Where is that located?

The cold water valve was broken, even though it turned it wouldn't open. By opening the bypass we could get water into the hot water heater because is was flowing back in through the hot. Easy fix. Thanks for everyone help!
