hi everyone, my wife and i just picked up our first TT a 2015 x17z and we cant wait to go camping. Anyone out there towing with a v6 2wd 4runner with a wdh rated for 5000lbs. Our car seemed to tow from the dealership ok felt a little wind but wasnt too bad. well probably be upgrading to a tacoma or tundra in the future but for now the 4runners all we got to take us to the great outdoors. so far the only mod ive done was swapped the stock mirror for a small medicine cabnet we got from lowes. any generator suggestions would be great, one that would power the ac?

We brought our new 23' home with a 2009 Tacoma (same base as the 4Runner) without significant problems.

The old trailer was an 18' and the Tacoma had no problem letting the trailer know who was the boss.


Standard rules apply when finding a genset: Add up the total watts for everything you want to power up. Add 25%. Then get a genset that has its running watts greater than the total.


Name brand gensets (Honda, Onan, etc.) will cost the most, but give better service and will be repairable over their lifetime. Off brand; you take your chances. Consider it a disposable item the second time it gives you grief.

Do a search on generators and you will find lots of feedback.

Fundamentally for example, a 3000 watt generator (usually rated at 2800 watts normal ) will produce ~23 amp at 120 volts. But this is at maximum load on the generator and will likely stall under that load. A 75% rate is a good safe place to be IMHO, or ~ 17 amps

Your AC unit will draw 12-13 amps to keep it running. Closer to 18-20 amps when the compressor first starts. (And restarts)

A 2800 watt generator will run your AC, but you won’t get much else in your RV ( charger, Microwave, coffee, etc..)

Also remember for every 5000 feet above sea level you will lose ~ 40% of the generator’s efficiency, leaving your 2800 watt gen set at about 10 amps.

The best solution is to consider 4000 watts or larger, or twin 2000 watt units that sync together.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum.

Be sure to check your tire pressures... TT and TV. Keeping them up at or near the maximum you see on the side of the tires can help reduce sway.

Welcome to camping! Great choice on the Jayco - we have our first TT a 2015 19XUD (we've been camping in some way all of our lives) and a 2015 Toyota Highlander XLE (5,000 capacity) and it pulls just great! Ours is about 500 pounds more than yours - GWVR, but we are using a REESE setup for weight distribution and sway control. In 2 months we have already put on about 2,000 highway miles (no more than 65 mph) and no problems!

sweet thanks, yea after taking our first trip last week i feel a lot more comfortable with our setup 4runner did a great job!

ok so i used oscar rivets that were suggested to me in this forum, they are seriously the best thing to use to hang things. i also backed it up with 4 pieces or 20 lbs double sided tape but dont think i needed it. got a light weight cabinet from lowes and just had to installed a door knob.

Looks good. What size rivets did you use? Can you get those at lowes also? Thanks.

They are 3/16 x 1" awning oscar rivets. They don't have them at Lowes. I ordered online at http://www.dyersonline.com/dometic-3-16-x-1-awning-oscar-rivet-6-pack.html

how has your medicine cabinet held up over the years? Any issues?
